Jenny yawned as she settled down at a table in the cafe, a cup of hot tea nestled there, hidden by a pile of papers. She pushed a paper away and picked up her cup, sipping it slowly, trying not to burn her mouth. Her green eyes focused on the paper in front of her, before setting it down. 'Heaven's above,' she thought to herself as she massaged her temples. How was she supposed to read this chicken scratch? She reached over for her red pen and started to write.
She did chance a glance up when a shadow fell over her. "Can Ah help ye?" she asked, a soft Scottish lilt in her voice.

Sonya cleared his throat. "Excuse me. Most of the other tables are full. Do you mind if I take my coffee here?"

Jenny offered him a warm smile. "Not at all," she said, instantly beginning to clear her stack of papers so he had room to settle. "Forgive tha mess," she apologized. "Ah ran out of tea leaves at my place so Ah came 'ere tae get a hot cuppa whilst grading papers."

He offered her a quiet smile. "It's no trouble. I'm the one invading your table after all. It gets busy here in the afternoons."

She gave a brief nod before returning her attention, for the moment to the paper in front of her. With a disgusted hiss, she pushed the paper away and glanced at her pen. No, not enough ink in it for that mess. "'tis one o' tha days Ah wonder why Ah teach," she said, taking a sip of her tea. "Not enough red ink tha world for that mess. Ye'd think wit' tha years this queen has spent in school she'd 'ave learnt to spelt the language properly by now."

Sonya couldn't help but arch an amused brow at her, a waitress dropping off his own cup of coffee. He took a welcome sip before replying. "Well, is not teaching about slogging on through such pain to better your students? At least, that's what my school teachers used to yell at me when I did something wrong. I confess I was never good at spelling until after I got out of school."

"It would nae be quite so bad if tha lass could remember how tae spell her /own/ name. Ah've counted tha times she's written a paper for my class. Six times an' each time she changes tha spellin'. 'twasn't cute tha first two times." She sighed and shook her head for a moment. "Ne'er mind tha number o' times she butchered tha Bard's works for those English papers."
She took a sip of tea and sighed. "Forgive an old teacher for complainin'," she said. "Ah just find myself growin' weary each passin' year with all the butcherin' o' tha language. At least, my excuse is my accent when Ah speak. Ah'm not sure what their excuse is."

He really couldn't help but look amused at that. "Probably lack of motivation," he murmured. "Or seeing how much they can wind you up. Not speaking from my own experience or anything here, but I seem to recall that being a common plot among school fellows--see how annoyed they could make the teacher before everything snapped."

She laughed. "Ah suppose ye're right," she said. "Although, they should be careful wit' that. After all, Ah am a MacBeth," she said, an amused twinkle in her eye. "Ah may be nae lady, but I ken probably pull a convincin' "Out, out, damn spot" an' truly worry whether Ah did snap or not."
((I promise to not go and quote huge passages from MacBeth...))

Sonya laughed into his coffee cup, carefully setting it down for the moment. "Well, that might well be an event I would pay to see. It must be interesting going to the theatre with a name like that. No one could address you by name."

"Ah tend tae avoid tha theatre when they play "Tha Scottish Play"," she said with a laugh. "Best not tae jinx them." She sipped her tea and chuckled softly. "If Ah ever do play Lady MacBeth, who isnae related, or if she was, she's on a different branch far from me and mine, Ah wouldst be sure tae let ye know."

"I was more referring to doing it in front of your students to terrify them, but I suppose traumatizing students is not something I should be advocating," he replied with a smile.

"Nae exac'ly, but," she gave a small shrug before she picked up her cup again and sipped it. "There are days they would deserve it." She sipped her tea again and looked at him. "Well, ye know what Ah do now, so what do ye do?"

He sighed softly. "Police commissioner," he replied, lifting the coffee cup, as if that explained it all. Which in many ways it did.

She raised her cup in salute. "'ere's tae tha boys in blue," she said softly, sipping her tea. "If it weren't for ye and they, this town would be in an even sadder state."
((no, no personal real life bias at all with Jenny approving the police force. Nope, wouldn't be because I have a cop in the family...))
