Coricopat wrapped his hands around the coffee mug, not drinking it, but staring into the liquid as he nodded, "Yes. To the exclusion of all else. I was a naive fool."

"Happens ta the best of cats," Macavity murmured.

The mottled tom raised his gaze to look at the other cat, "I am sorry, Mac. Deeply."

"It is goin' ta take so much more than that," Macavity told him, meeting his eyes.

"I know that. And I'm willing to do my utmost to do whatever needs to be done, Mac," Coricopat spoke quietly, but there was an adamant force to his tone.

Mac sighed, swinging back a huge gulp of the coffee, not even minding when it burned the back of his throat. "So, you're lookin' around at positions?"

Macavity nodded, looking back at his own coffee. "How lon' you been back in town?"

"Well, I'm sure that will be good for you," Mac said and managed not to sound angry or bitter. Just when he thought he could get Tugger and himself out of here he'd been reminded in the worst possible way how much of a target that would make his little brother. So here he remained still.
