Without actually replying, Macavity buried his face behind his paws, nearly knocking the coffee over.

Cori instinctively moved the coffee away a little bit, "Mac? I..." his ears flickered, "I'm sorry. That...I...I shouldn't have said anything. The offer stands."

"You really have been 'one a lon' time, huh?" Mac muttered, shaking his head slightly from where it was still behind his paws.

Coricopat hesitated for a long moment before nodding very slightly, "Yes. I have. I don't see what that really has to do with...That is..." He frowned in confusion.

"You have no actual concept of what's happened," Macavity said, still not looking at him. "Ta ask me that, you really have no idea."

"Then why not explain it to me, Mac?"

"It's not somethin' you can tell, Cor, like mentionin' the weather."

Coricopat fell silent, his mind tracking back over their conversation to see if he could find anything to explain this. He finished off his coffee, setting the mug aside before he spoke, "You mentioned being trained to kill?" His voice was quiet, not indicating thoughts one way or the other.

Macavity rose, dumping the coffee in the sink and bracing his arms on the counter. "After you left, after I 'ot out of highschool, I went and did the respectable thin'. 'ot a job, tried to earn money without bein' able ta afford goin' ta college..." He tried not to sound like he was blaming Cor, even if he was. "Then I needed ta take Tugger ta the hospital and I couldn't even pay for the doctor's visit. The doctor did himself." Macavity still had no idea what to do with thoughts of that particular doctor.
"So, I needed money. I may have 'otten involved in... bad things ta 'et it though."

Coricopat rose after a moment, setting his empty cup in the sink and looking at the red tabby. He stayed quiet for another full minute before finally responding, "It's Felidae. There's no way to not get involved in that. My offer stands."

"Yeah, sure, and make you and Tugger targets," Macavity muttered, not looking at his friend.

"You're living in the same house with Tugger already, and I'm becoming a lawyer in this town. If I don't make a target of myself to begin with I'm likely going to end up entangled in that side of the law anyway." He shook his head slightly, "The offer stands, but that doesn't mean you have to take it. I will help you in any way I can, though. Even if it just means working as legal counsel for you."

Macavity just stared at him in shock for a long moment, nodding mutely.

Coricopat checked his watch, "What time do you expect Deuteronomy home?"

Macavity glanced over at the mantle clock abruptly, and shrugged. "You're still on the safe side," he replied gruffly, actually finally convinced the other meant what he said about staying in town and trying again.
