"I'm pretty sure the son of a bitch would burn them. It's the sort of thing he'd do," Came the reply. "Mac, please."

"Six years is a damn lon' time, Cor!" Macavity said. "What the hell do you want me ta say? Welcome back, hope you had a good trip?"

"No, but I'd like to have some idea of if there's anything I can possibly do. Ever."

"Ever? Maybe in eighteen years you can 'ive that a try," Macavity replied. His entire spine was tense with anger. After all, his only friend who could actually afford an education had gone out of town promising to be back on breaks and write letters. Then, six years of silence. Six years in hell of silence.

Coricopat looked away, "I'm sorry, Mac. I...I got wrapped up in something that was worth nothing in the end. I-I broke a promise. An important one. That I should have kept. I know that."

Crossing his arms over his chest, Macavity considered him a long moment. "It takes more than sayin' sorry ta make up for this," he said. "You have no idea what the past six years were like."

The mottled tom dropped his gaze, "No. I don't. And I know it takes more than that. I want to try, Macavity. I know I can't make it up to you, I know that. I just...I want to try to at least be on speaking terms again."

For a long moment Macavity just stared at him. "What was it?" he asked finally with a small upward tilt of his chin. "What was so damn important in that damn important school of yours?"

"I..." Coricopat bit his lower lip, "I fell in love. Or I thought I did. It...absorbed me and I..." he shook his head, "I was a fool."

That was possibly the only answer that would have taken Macavity back. "You... You? In love?" He really didn't sound like he believed it.

Coricopat nodded again, "It went to hell about a month and a half ago."

Macavity's mouth twisted and he actually looked less than pleased than he had a moment ago. "'et in line," he muttered.

The other cat frowned in confusion at that, "Come again? Mac...what happened?"

"What happened?" Macavity demanded, voice rising in anger. "When? Which year? Which order do you want this damn list in, Cor? When my father attacked my baby brother with a broken bottle and I attempted ta carry him across town all the way to the hospital? Or that the doctor wouldn't let me pay for it--not like I could have hoped ta hell ta afford a visit to the hospital? Or when the job at the bank fell through damn hard? Or when I 'ot myself trained how ta kill? Or that my lover was blamed for a crime h--they didn't commit and had ta leave town? And believe me, Cor, those are just the damn highlights."

The smaller cat's eyes had widened, "Mac...I...Cat....I...that..."
