Mungojerrie checked his pockets again for his truck keys, his switchblade and the half-carved tiger he was working on. “What was that?” He called back into the cozy-looking house, his Georgia accent ringing in the morning air as he paused for a response. “Already told ya. I’ll be back for supper, but I ain’t gonna be here for lunch. Got work at th’ docks t’day.” Another pause. “Yeah, tha’s right.” He rolled his eyes, one paw still resting on the doorknob as he listened to the muffled tone from indoors. “Alright, got it. See ya later.”
Before anything more could be said he shut the door, stepping off of the shaded porch and heading toward his truck. It was a relatively old thing, but it still ran and he kept it in good condition so it should last for a while yet. The cover was a little tattered, he knew he’d need to replace that soon, but it could wait. He opened the door of the truck, pausing as he tried to remember if he was forgetting something.

Tugger reached Mungojerrie's yard just as he heard the front door slam, and he jogged the last few steps to catch up with the other tomcat as he opened the truck door. "Mungo, hey!"

Jerrie looked up in surprise, his gaze flickering to where the eastern horizon was turning golden with the rising sun. “Tugger? Y’ here awful early. What bring y’ out here?”

Tugger sighed for a moment, catching his breath, "I need a favour," he admitted, "and a ride downtown."

The torbie motioned to the truck cab. “Hop in an’ you can ask th’ favor on th’ way.” He was due at work shortly and it would be best if they talked as he drove to save the time.

Tugger opened the truck's passenger door and got in, "Thanks, I appreciate it. I would've called first..." he let the sentance hang rather than attempting to finish it.

”Your phone ain’t exactly the most accessible thing I’ve ever seen.” Jerrie nodded as he spoke, hopping up into the driver’s seat and starting the truck, backing carefully out of the drive. “Now, what’s this ‘bout a favor?”

Tugger gave Mungo an easy smile, grateful for his friend's understanding, he was silent for a moment, thinking about how to explain, before deciding to just out with it.
"I need a job. Money's tight y'know... I dunno, was hoping you might know someone or could put in a good word or something?"

Jerrie hesitated. “A job.” Putting in a good word, helping Tugger out with this…it meant putting himself on the line to some extent. Ah, what the hell, Tug was a good friend and at the worst he picked up some of the slack. “Well, I’ve got a few people I do jobs for, y’ could tag along with me t’day see if there’s anything extra they’re needin' done.”

Tugger grinned at Mungo again, one hand resting briefly on his friend's shoulder in a gesture of thanks. "You're a life saver, I owe you for this. Really, thanks a lot, I appreciate it."

“Don’ mention it. That’s what friends’re for, right? So, what put th’ bee in y’ bonnet t’ get a job?” Sure, Tugger had mentioned money being tight, but there had to be more than that, in the nearly four years Jerrie had known him he hadn’t seen the other tom this set on finding some form of work.

Tugger shrugged "'Straps has been on my back about it," he paused, wondering if he should mention anything further, like the fact his brother maybe had a point, "plus I could use something as a cover for the other stuff. Keep up apperances, y'know. Besides, knocking about that house is driving me crazy."

Jerrie nodded slightly, "Yeah, a cover might do some good. Dunno if it'll help steer y' clear of goin' crazy though, I think y' already well on y' way." The torbie glanced at his friend a grin tugging at the corners of his lips.

Tugger couldn't help but chuckle at that, "I think you're confusing crazy with attractive, witty and charming." he grinned back at the the other tom, his smile not dissapearing this time. Today seemed to be looking up already, despite being awake at what still seemed such an ungodly hour, "How d'you cope getting up this early?"

Jerrie shrugged. "Y' do what y' gotta do. If it means gettin' up before the sun, well, been doin' that most of m' life. If it means stayin' up til all hours a th' night, I've done that for years too." He glanced at his friend. "In other words? Practice."
