"We'd never be able to repay him, Tug." Munkus reasoned.

"That ain't the point, it's the principal of the thing."
Tugger was having an internal struggle, maybe it was because he'd grown up seeing Macavity's own dislike of charity, but then the number of times his eldest brother had humbled himself and accepted it, despite that. On more than one occasion for his youngest brother's sake.

Tugger felt his fur bristle somewhat, "I know I ain't exactly bringin' in what you are an' it ain't anywhere near whatever he makes." his cheeks coloured beneath his fur as he spoke.

Munkustrap looked taken aback at that. "That's not what I meant, Tugger."

Tugger caught Munkustrap's expression and sighed, trying to calm himself down. He took his coffee cup and rinsed it out at the sink, more for something to hide his humiliation than anything else. "Even if you didn't it don't change what's true. I coulda' done a lot more, shouldn't be Mac still payin' f'me. Oughta' be the other way around." all of this was addressed in somewhat of a mumble to the plughole.

"He's not paying for you, Tugger." Munkus replied quietly.

"Yeah but if I'd got my act together sooner he wouldn't be needin' to. Or we wouldn't need it as much. Or somethin'. He was always tellin' me t'get a job."

"Tugger..." Munk sighed. "Well, we'll be able to replace the stove..."

"Mebbe' he shoulda' bought us a new one of those instead." Tugger suggested, it was a smaller amount of money, he'd have felt better about that.

"It certainly would have been easier to swallow the pride required for that gift." Munkus agreed. "I was lucky to talk him out of that too."

Tugger turned sharply to look at his brother, "You've bin' t'see him?"

Munkus nodded, rising to deal with his dishes. "I went as soon as I found out about the mortgage."

"And?" Tugger prompted, "What did he say?"

"That he wants to help where he can, that I need to be sure not to make myself sick, and that he hopes to see us on New Years." And that he couldn't believe I have a gal.
