Taradan nodded approvingly at that, "Good lad. I got a bit t'give to her an' all, just coz I'm moved out don't mean I've stopped helpin' out."

Ricky looked at his older brother. "Ah. Well, that's good I guess."

"She's my Ma," Taradan said simply, "I'm always gonna look out f'her."

The kit nodded. "Yeah. You're gonna be careful too, right?"

"I didn't get this far by not takin' care, let's put it that way." Taradan replied, "Got no reason t'stop now."

"Jus' sayin'. Wouldn't be any easier on her if somethin' happened to you neither."

Taradan shrugged this off, not liking the truth in his youngest brother's words. "Perhaps not, but I'm old enough t'take care of myself. An' like it or not, you're always gonna' be her little baby."

Ricky grimaced at that. "Yeah, well she worries bout you too. Especially since you ain't home nights anymore. She don't hear from you as much."

Inwardly, Taradan groaned, he didn't need the third degree about family from his little brother on top of this. "I ain't bin' home nights f'years. An' of course she don't see me so much, I don't live there anymore. Y'know I drop in whenever I can."

"I know, it jus' don't sit right with her, y'know that." THe kit replied, feeling moderately vindicated that there was something to call his elder brother out on.

"What don't? Me movin' out? I'm twenty-six f'Cat's sake. Couldn't stay there f'ever, payin' my way or not."

"How rarely y' check in." Ricky replied. "Especially in this town. Even if she don't know what y' do when you ain't at the gas station."

"She don't need t'know what I do when I ain't at the gas station." a hint of a growl crept into Taradan's voice as he spoke, "An' if you even think of tellin' her. Well you're gonna open a whole nasty bag o'worms f'the both of us." a pause whilst he considered what else his brother had said, "An' I check in plenty, she sees me at least once a week, more when I got the time."

"Everlastin' Cat, I alredy told y' what you said was stayin' between us!" Ricky growled. "I'm jus' sayin'. She worries, it's what she does."

"She's Ma, of course she worries. An' I bet she worries about you a whole lot more than she does me." Once again and almost automatically, Taradan's hand came down to cuff his younger brother about the ears, mostly out of irritiation.
"So stop bein' so smart all the time!"
He felt a slight need to justify his action as he did it, wondering for a brief second afterwards if he was getting too used to this and knocking the kit about too much. Then again, how else was he going to learn? Suffice to say it was the only way Taradan knew.
