Taradan sighed, it looked like he would have to tell his brother eveything. "Look, I'll level with you. I got warned today that you'd bin' seen at Jones' place, an' recently I did a job that didn't go exactly as planned. I got warned about that too, it don't take a genius to put two an' two together, you ain't safe workin' for 'im."

Ricky's ears went back a bit at that. "I got that much. I know it ain't safe. never said it was. I'll try'n stay outta trouble, but that's all I c'n do."

Taradan nodded, "I jus' don' want you gettin' hurt over somethin' that I've done. But they'll use you workin' for Jones as an excuse f'it, ta' get t'me. Least if we was workin' f'the same side, they wouldn't have that, an' you'd hopefully give 'em enough reason not ta' want to hurt you."

"I'll try, but Taradan... Jones knows where I sell papes, it ain't like I can just pull out."

Another nod, and Taradan was silent for a moment, thinking. "Ideally I'd like you outta this altogether," he admitted to his brother, "but seein' as how you are involved an' it ain't that easy t'duck back out of, I'm wonderin' if we could get you somethin' workin' f'the same lot as me. An' maybe a new legit job elsewhere, so Jones won't be gettin' t'you. Still reckon I could getcha somethin' at the gas station."

Damnit that kit had too much pride, Taradan did his best to shrug off Ricky's answer, rather than getting annoyed that Ricky didn't know a good offer when he saw one.
"Well like I said, it's your decision, you ever swallow your pride enough ta' change your mind, y'know where to find me. It would pay better than the paper sellin', that's all I'm sayin'."

"Yeah, I'll elt ya know if I ever wanna spend my day bowin' and scrapin' to people who don't think I'm worth th' dirt they walk on." Ricky answered, almsot snapping but not quite.

"An' you're tellin' me Jones treats you any different?" Taradan retorted "Somtimes I wonder if you'd know a good thing if it hit you in the face."

"Jones don't, but some of th' people he sends me with messages do. I just...want t' feel like I'm doin' something. Y'know?"

Taradan shurgged, "Everyone's gotta start somewhere, my boss at the garage started off pumpin' gas."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Pull y'self up by your bootstraps. Work hard an' y' can make somethin' of yourself. Already heard it." Ricky shook his head. "I'll get it sorted out, don' worry so much."

"In this town it's survival of the fittest, that's all I know, y'do what y'can. But like I said, I ain't gonna push you. I'm done with trying t'tell you what might be good for you." Taradan replied, just a little coolly.

Ricky's ears lowered at the tone, but he nodded. "I'll look at it and see what I c'n do. I just...yeah. I'll figure it out."

"Just f'Cat's sake do somethin' about Jones sooner rather than later. You could actually be in some real danger here."
