"Ah," Alonzo said, possibly knowing a little too well. "Which bit of your family, if you don't mind answerin' the question, of course."

Slois rubbed the back of his neck as he replied. "Parents," He said in response. It wasn't a lie, this all came about from their parents... Indirectly but none the less it spurred from their parents. Blaming his parents was easier than explaining his whole life story to this stranger anyway.

"Oh," Alonzo said, tail curling. "That's usually the worst trouble, eh? Probably worst of all when they're no longer around though."

The tabby's throat clentched for a moment and he managed a nod. "Right," He agreed quietly.

Alonzo considered his expression and his ears went back. "Oh. I'm sorry."

The taller tom let out a sigh and waved off the other's apology. "No need to be sorry," He mumbled. "It's not your fault. Just-" Mine. He was so close to adding the last part but he really didn't feel like ellaborating so he let the sentence fall, unfinished.

"Still, I ran my mouth into somethin' I probably shouldn't have," Alonzo shrugged, leaning back, his entire posture open and honest. "And if I recalled anythin' painful then I'm sorry for that."

Slois waved his hand again. "It's in the past," He said and offered a weak smile. "Best not to dwell in the past. Tends to make you forget about the present."

"Sometimes..." Alonzo murmured.

Slois shrugged his shoulders slightly in loose agreement. "Sometimes..." He repeated.
The tabby shook his head and forced himself to give the other tom a smile. "Didn't you want to practice?"

For a moment Alonzo blinked at him, feeling disjointed and confused. "You mean here?"

Slois shook his head and gestured along the path that the tom had been traveling. "You said you liked getting there early to practice?" He prompted. It's not that he wanted the other tom to go but he felt he kind of ruined the tom's day and didn't want to make it any worse than it already was.

Alonzo shrugged, plopping down on the bench. "Well, can strictly practice anywhere, and honestly there's somethin' about doing it out in the open and nature, you know? If you wouldn't mind of course..."

Slois let his arm fall and raised his shoulders in a shrug. "Sure," He said and sat down next the other tom. "Let's here what you've got."

Carefully, Alonzo opened the case and pulled out the fiddle. It was the only good quality possession he owned, and tuned every night. Checking the strings, he put it up under his chin, started on a slow tune that melted quickly enough into a jig.
