"You owe me nothing, but it certainly would make our business easier, yes," he replied, almost wincing at how clod his tone was.

Cassandra fell silent. She stared into her tea and tried to find the words to make this any less painful than it was, but there were none.
"I left. You've gathered that. I left, because I was forced to. Though you have no reason to believe that, and the only cat who can verify this is dead now, and this town is better off without him throwing his considerable weight around." She was edging around the subject, not naming names. Hoping Genghis would catch the pieces she was giving him and put the picture together.
"I left, to keep from being coerced into work I would find against my morals." I left to protect you.

The Siamese remained silent for a long moment, "You left because that last job you took went wrong and he found out, didn't you?" He bit back the 'I told you it would' that leaped to the tip of his tongue. "You couldn't have left so much as a note to let me know?"

"He's the reason it went wrong. I misjudged him. And I paid for it. I couldn't risk you paying for it too." She refused to drop her eyes from his.

"And so you left without a word. I would have liked some say in that departure without a farewell."

"I won't apologize for it. You know that." She says. "You know me too well to expect that." It might not be true, but she felt as justified now as she did then, and now she didn't have the presence of Jones breathing down her neck.

Genghis frowned slightly at that, "No, that would be asking you to show a weakness and we wouldn't wish for that, now would we." Cat, he sounded as bitter as he felt. "I still don't understand the decision, but I have some feel for the why of it now."

"I don't expect things will be the same." Though, Cat, I wish they could be. "We've both changed, I think, but maybe we can try working together again."

"No, Miss Amonasro. Things won't be the same. But I do not see why that should affect our ability to work together in business."

"So. To business then?" She asked, sipping at her tea.

He nodded slightly as the waitress returned with their meals, "To business."

Cassandra settled her napkin in her lap. "Alright, so your business is fairly well built at this point. Are you looking to expand at all?"

"With time all business expand or they go under. Within the short term, no, not really. Over the next few years I'm looking into seeing what sort of shipping I can do with Asia. The difficulty is the routes to Asia. And of course funding for anything more than Europe. It's doable, but I prefer to trade with Europe, due to several factors, some of them personal."

"Will that require much capital? Or is it rather a matter of making contacts on the other end?" She asked.

"At the moment it is a matter of contacts. I would like to see how much the European interests can be expanded before branching to another continent though," Genghis admitted.
