Brachen sat in his cell. He didn't know why, but he was humming one of the songs his mother had taught him. Their family had long since forgotten what the words meant, but the tune and the sounds stayed with them.
He pressed his head against the back wall. He'd failed. Again. And he was going to pay. There was a part of him that just wanted to go away again...but he couldn't just leave and let somecat else control his life.

Munkustrap was lead to Brachen's cell, glancing at the guard, "Open it." The other cat looked like he was going to protest, but the lawyer frowned at him. The cell door was opened and the silver tabby stepped in, his ears flickering at the muttered insult the officer offered as he passed him.
The cell door clanged shut, the key turning in the lock. They had thirty minutes before the officer would come check again, barring Munkustrap calling for him. Once the guard had left the lawyer spoke, "Mr. Myre?"

Brachen looked up. "That's me."

"My name's Munkustrap Hollister. I've been hired to represent you in court." The tabby spoke simply.

"Hollister?" Brachen's ears perked. "Munkus...Yeah, I know your name. I believe we have somecat in common..."

He nodded slightly, "He's the one who called me."

"...I kinda thought he'd leave me for the dogs after this, you know." He smiled. "Lost causes are just like him, though. It's part of what makes him so charming."

Munkus' lips quirked up a bit at that, setting the memory of Mac very nearly begging him aside. "Something tells me he couldn't leave you to this for anything."

Brachen smiled, something warm in his heart again. "So...you got any ideas, Defense Counsel?"

Munkustrap hesitated, taking a deep breath, "Unfortunately the cards and public opinion are stacked against us. I'm intending to speak with a psychiatrist this afternoon and see if I can get her to testify at the trial. Our best bet may be an insanity plea, if only to keep it long enough for a possible appeal or dismissal."

"I understand," Brachen replied, staring off into nothing. He hated this, hated having his life in the control of others, even if he understood why it was happening. "If I'm convicted I die and if I leave alive I'll be sent to an asylum, a six by ten room until I'm old and my mind is feeble. Maybe they'll control me, though." His neck was itching again, and the sudden fear he felt told him the latter was better than the former.

"The difficulty may be in said appeal though. The chances of us being able to overturn a conviction with this defense are next to nothing. It also depends on the methods that the prosecution uses. I would prefer not to put you on the stand, if at all possible." Munkus spoke quietly, his mind churning over the ways this could end. None of them were good. On the one hand the noose, on the other the asylums....

"...Would you believe me if I told you I was scared?"

Munkustrap looked at the other cat for a long moment, nodding, "I would. If you said you weren't, that would be what I would doubt."

He chuckled, and it sounded a little mad. "But it doesn't strike you funny at all? All that killing and I'm afraid to die?"
