He returned the faint smile. "Oh? Not a fan then?" he asked softly, continuing to gently pet her hair.

She grimaced. "They're not even supposed to be seeking johns so openly. For pity's sake it masquerades as a burlesque house not a brothel." Grids sighed, leaning her head into his paw. "And their madame doesn't listen to me."

"Should the madame listen to you?" he asked, actually curious, leaning over to kiss the top of her head slightly.

"When it comes to the well-being of her girls I should certainly hope Grizabella would goddamn listen to me." She almost snapped.

Face still pressed against the top of her head, Macavity froze entirely, forgetting to breath for a moment. "Grizabella?" he asked, voice breaking on the name.

Griddlebone paused, her ear flickering at his tone as she tried to draw back a bit. "Yes?"

Mac let her draw back but remained frozen, fur starting to stand on end. "Full name," he forced out. "What's her full name, what's she look like, sonofabitch how old is she?" He couldn't seem to convince his lungs to take in enough air.

Her ears flickered at that. "Grizabella...Mar-something or other. She's smallish, a tabby, greying now, I think she may have had some gold to her fur at one point? Blue eyes. I couldn't say her age with any certainty...older?" Grids' green eyes scanned Mac's face. "Macavity, what's wrong?"

Macavity's paws came up to rest on both of Griddlebone's shoulders. "Try ta think really hard about that last name. Was it Marquardt-Hollister?" He was shaking, and he didn't even bother trying to stop.

Her ears flicked back at that, her paw rising to rest on his as she considered before nodding. "I...I think so." Hollister....oh dear... "Mac? Who is she to you?"

He sucked in a deep breath. "She... she... No, it can't be her there's no damn way..."

Grids reached out, resting a paw on his cheek. "Mac?"

"No," Mac repeated, shaking his head. "No, she left over twenty years ago, there's no way it could, that she could..."

The white queen stepped closer, taking his face in her paws and tipping it down so she could look him in the eye. "Macavity. Who is she?"

"I..." Mac took in a hard and deep breath. "If she..." he swallowed hard. "She might be my mother." He couldn't believe he managed to say such a thing out loud. He hated it, hated this shock that felt like a punch to the gut. She left that should have been the end of it, he shouldn't have had to think about it.
