Brachen was trying not to get nervous waiting for Mac, trying not to check his watch. Today wasn't about time. He was going to have a good time with Mac, then he was going to ask him for help.
But he wanted a little bit of time with Mac to himself, without his problems between them. It had been so long...and he enjoyed the tom Mac had grown into.
Brachen also didn't even know if he could be helped. When he lost it, now, he was seized by something wild and capricious. It had always been a tool at his disposal, the nature of his trade that was exercised on the wretched or, at very least, those that had slighted his employers in some way. Now it was untamed, and Brachen wasn't sure it could be reigned in --- he felt himself slipping into it more every time and he wasn't sure how long he had.
He wanted the memory of this day with Mac.

Macavity was only running a few minutes late, but that alone was setting his fur a bit on edge. Too much paperwork, and too many idiots between him and the dining hall. Entering, he glanced around, picking out Brachen and stilling for a moment before walking over. "Hey," he said softly.

Brachen felt something light up in him. "Mac," he said, smiling genuinely. "Rough day?"

Mac paused for a moment upon reaching the table before offering the other a grin and slipping into the chair. "Naw. No more than usual anyway." He paused again. "It's gettin' a bit better at any rate. The mornin' certainly has no effect on the afternoon unless you let it."

"That's a good philosophy to have. Relaxing will save your heart later on."

"I doubt it'll be my heart that kills me," Mac said, in perfect seriousness.
((Oh, honey, it might well be...))

"Death will take one look at you and run the other way," Brachen replied with a smirk.

That garnered a chuckle from Macavity, and he could feel his shoulders start to un-tense as he settled more comfortably in the chair. Pulling out a cigarette and his lighter, he looked the other over as he lit it. "How have you been then?" he asked, voice soft.

Brachen tried to keep his expression even. "I've been good. Trying to keep busy."

Mac nodded, smiling faintly. "Want some of my work ta help you keep busy? I sometimes think I have more than I can handle."

"I wouldn't mind, honestly. I feel like my own skin is too tight." Brachen nodded as the waiter came by to fill up their water glasses. "Nothing too physical, though. I'm trying to break the habit and learn how to relax."

Mac blinked. "Hell of a habit ta break, but no, I meant even just dealin' with some of the paper work and logistics."

"You got that right," he growled into his water tumbler. Then Brachen brightened. "Anytime." Maybe that would be enough - maybe being around Mac and having something to occupy his time with would help him. "I can only water the plants on the sill so many times before my brain starts numbing. I haven't been able to paint in the longest time."

Blinking, Mac considered that. "That's ta bad," he said finally. "You were... always good at paintin'." Didn't always mean Mac liked the subject matter quite as much as the other, but he had skill at it. And it had seemed to help calm him down as well. He paused a moment. "You have plants?" he asked with a cheeky grin.

Brachen glowed at the compliment. He'd always known Mac to be uncomfortable with his artistic choices, even though he was nothing but complimentary, and he realized he found it a little...cute. "Yeah, I miss it. I kind of liked the novelty of having a habit that wouldn't get me arrested."
