Tantomile breathed in sharply as her brother rose, she hadn't meant to take this out on him, but she couldn't hide how bitterly upset she was. She drew her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms about them. When she spoke, her tone was softer again, "I don't blame you for this Cori, really. I'm just frustrated."

The tom sighed, looking down at his sister and shaking his head. "I know, Tant. I just... there's nothing I can do and, well..." he shrugged. The least you could do is try to be a little bit happy for me.

Perhaps she wasn't doing the best job of showing it, but Tantomile was happy for her brother, it might have been a different story if he didn't care about a college education, but still got it anyway, but she knew he wanted it almost as much as she did." Like I said before," she managed, "If we both can't I'm glad you can."

She focused on the opposite wall. "It's not that selfish of me to want the same for myself is it?"

Cori sighed. "I guess not. But, Tant. It just isn't done that way. And you know they're going to be lucky if they can afford to send me."

His words did nothing to make her feel better, only returning that pang of guilt from before. Tantomile hugged her knees tighter, resting her chin on them as she felt a lump come in her throat. She closed her eyes to try and stem that feeling of welling up from behind them. She was sixteen damnit, she wasn't going to cry, especially not on her birthday.

Cori sighed, looking her over, but headed for the door.

Tantomile's ears flicked at the sound of her brother's retreating footsteps. She glanced up at him, eyes bright with tears that still threatened to fall. "What would you do, if you were me, if things were the other way around?"

He paused a hand on the door, before turning to look over his shoulder at her. "I'd deal with the fact that this is a middle-class family, college is expensive, and women rarely attend it."

Stating facts or not, her brother's words hurt, any last comfort she was attmpting to seek from him vanished. Suddenly she even wondered if he'd guessed, despite all their enthusiastic talks about the future, that things were likely to end up this way from the start. Her eyes narrowed at Coricopat and the door, "Get out."

Cori hesitated a moment, his ears going back. "Tant..I..."

"You 'what', Cori?" she asked, sucking a breath inwards as she heard her voice crack, forced to wipe a hasty paw across her eyes as the first of the tears spilt. "Not that it matters to you anyhow," she added bitterly, "you've got what you want. So go ahead, enjoy it."

His ears lay back more. He was going to offer an apology and any help he could offer, but... "Nothing I guess." He scowled, exiting the room, slamming the door shut behind him.
((Exit Coricopat))

Tantomile flinched as the door slammed, she grabbed a pillow from the bed and threw it at the door, more out of frustration with herself than anger at her brother, it fell short anyway, hitting the floor with a soft 'floof'. Tantomile looked at it for a second before flopping, face down on the bed and burying her face in the remaining pillow, allowing herself to sob into it, though she no longer cared who heard her.
Tantomile didn't return downstairs that night, there had been plans as a family for after dinner, including the giving of birthday presents for the twins. But even the thought of that wasn't enough to make Tantomile want join her parents and brother that evening, she felt a little bad for spoiling things for Cori, but given their conversation, they would be pressed to get worse anyway. When she had no more tears left to cry, she distracted herself with a book for a while then went to bed early.
Unsurprisingly, Tantomile hadn't slept well, and it was a very subdued young queen with clear shadows beneath her eyes who was seated at the breakfast table the next morning.
