Mistoffelees rolled off the couch several hours later than he generally slept, though for once he had actually managed to fall back asleep after waking in the middle of the night due to nightmares. He couldn't quite figure out if they were getting better or worse.
For several hours he just puttered around the house that wasn't his--didn't even have a semblance of being his like at least the house of Fourth Street had had. It was his day off--why did he have days off again?--and he'd dozed past the two actual occupants of the house leaving. He cleaned the kitchen and a good deal of the living room while he was trying to think of something to do with himself, not really thinking any of the motions through. Mostly he was trying to ignore the book he had bought the other day, when he had been shopping for a tie. He'd actually picked up two at the store, still unsure of what exactly he was trying to prove and not liking who he was trying to prove it to.
At some point, he looked around, and missing something, went down to the basement to see if it might be found there. If not, he could live without it, but if they happened to have it... He paused on the steps, blinking, blinking again, and returning upstairs. Oh great. And yet he was hardly surprised.
Eventually he gave up, shuffling through the bag until he produced the book, and curled up against one arm of the couch, still feeling jittery, but calming slightly as he read.

Jerrie entered the house in the late afternoon, glad to be home. Work hadn't been as long today, but it had been tiring. He poked his head in the front room to check and see if Misto was there. "Hey, M. How was y' day?"

Misto had been rather absorbed in the book and so jumped slightly when Jerrie entered. "Ah, fine. I hope you don't mind, I ended up doing some cleaning..." He sighed. "Um, how was your day?"

"That's good, and it's fine. Just got a little... distracted by the book I was reading is all." He set it aside very carefully.

"What book?"

Misto actually twitched slightly at that, a little guiltily. "I, House of Seven Gables."

Jerrie's brow rose as he took a seat. "Really?"

Blinking for a minute, Misto nodded. "Um, yeah. Why?"

Jerrie shrugged. "New interest then?"

"I, yeah, I guess you could say that," Misto said, his paw curling around his vest edge, trying so hard not to will it to go for the tie. "I've always liked older books though, just never explored this one before."

"Well enough," Misto said quietly. "So, still in the basement then?" he added, abruptly changing the subject, wanting to get away from the thoughts that were making his stomach twist and, everlasting cat, he was feeling guilty almost for reading that book.

Jerrie blinked at that for a long moment. "I....what?"
