"Well just make sure you take care of her then." Tugger said shortly, "Don't get her mixed up in anythin' dangerous."

Mac gaped at him, paw still frozen halfway to his mouth, the cigarette almost burning out. Swearing, he shoved it into the ashtray and lit a new one. "Excuse me?" he said finally. "Don't 'et her...? Considerin' how hard I've worked to keep you out of danger, that's rich as all hell."

Tugger snorted, the night of his arrest still a little too fresh in his mind to allow that comment to pass. "I mean it, the Lady's been good to me and I'd hate to see anythin' happen to her. If it wern't down to her, I'd still be a murder suspect." he narrowed his eyes at his brother.

"I... what?" Mac glanced over at her and back to his brother. "Oh Jesus Tugger it's hardly like I planned that and you seem to have gotten out just fine. Yer were never an actual suspect... they had nothin' on you and even if they had tried ta take you to court I have... how many lawyers on my payroll? Seriously baby brother."

Griddlebone looked up, her gaze darting to Mac, her ears flickering a bit. That was him? 'Business deals' at the docks were one thing but that? She shook her head very slightly.

"You wouldn'tve trusted Munk to get me off then?" Tugger asked after a moment, there was only curiosity in his tone though, he wasn't accusing Macavity, though his mind did flick back to the previous night and Munkustrap's comment about how he and Mac avoided speaking.

Mac spread his paws. "Wouldn't have held--he too obviously had a connection to you and a desire to see you 'et off light. Can't have brothers defendin' each other in a case like that, their motivation is too suspect. Makes the case weak."

"I guess that makes some kind of sense." Tugger agreed, "You gonna give me the number of someone else to call next time then?"

Mac almost growled. "There won't be a next time, and you already have my number, unless you managed ta lose it."

"Jeez Mac, I was jokin'." Tugger frowned at his brother for a moment before bending down to retrieve the towel he'd dropped earlier.

Mac leaned back in his chair, wincing a little. Damnit, it would act up now. He took a long drag of smoke.

Griddlebone glanced at Macavity again. "Can I get you anything for that?"

Mac glanced over at her and shook his head. "It's fine. Just pulled it wrong." He thought for a moment and then paled under his red fur. Tugger had mentioned the murders, in front of her. Shit. Shit. Did she understand what he meant? He turned his gaze back to Tugger, ignoring the question in his own head.

She straightened, putting her paws on her hips, but simply shook her head. "You're too stubborn for your own good."

Still retriving the towel, Tugger had missed Macavity's wince, but he did catch the conversation and eyed his brother carefully before turning to Griddlebone, "What's he done to himself?"
