"What's it matter if I'm happy there?" The small tabby rested his chin on his knees, his gaze dropping again, "It's an okay home. I can do what I like, long's I don't fail outta classes."

"It was a question," Sonya shrugged. Perhaps he was simply projecting, remembering his own lonely childhood without much affection. "I am trying to figure out the reason you are not co-operating. Is it because you are afraid of something?"

"Well, you have just informed me you did see something," Sonya said. "So the question is, what scares you most? We are quite capable of offering protection."

Not even looking offended, Sonya nodded. "I know. Probably a substantial amount beyond half, honestly. Do you think I am a dirty cop?"

"I dunno. But most of 'em are. So, I don' trust that protection'll do any good t'all." Ricky's tail uncurled enough to thrash next to his chair.

"Can't think of anythin'. Anycat c'n be bought. Or most can. I..." He drew a breath, curling in tighter again, "Look. He'll kill me I say anythin'. I ain't willin' t' risk that." His ears lay back his voice getting smaller, "I ain't even sixteen yet."

Leaning forward, Sonya rested his chin on his crossed paws, thinking. "What if I made you a deal?" he asked, quietly. "You would be put under my personal protection, to whatever extent you desired. I have a fairly large flat in town with a degree of privacy if you would take it that far. You do not have to tell me anything now, if you are scared, but once you have learned to trust me and as this investigation continues."
