For a long moment, Alonzo stood stunned before hesitantly putting a paw on the back of her shoulder blade. "It... it's not pity. Compassion and empathy aren't pity," he said, voice going low and warm despite the bustle of the area. "Hey, look, I need to play again tonight in like half an hour. Do you... between now and then, want to do like, sit out side where it's a bit more quiet? Maybe talk a bit?"

Victoria paused a moment, if she hadn't had that drink she might have spent it worrying over the consequences of that suggestion, but with her mind feeling like the inside of a muff, concern for consequences was slipping out of her grasp. She lifted her head off the bar and nodded. "Alright." His paw on her back was warm through the thin fabric of her dress, and she kind of liked the touch.

"Come on," he said, slipping his arm around her waist and leading her toward the back exit, where there were some stairs. It was cold outside, but much quieter. He plopped down on the steps and glanced back at her. "Do you want to talk?"

The chill air outside bit into Victoria's skin, and for once she wished she had as thick an undercoat as her father had had. She could feel the fur on her forelimbs fluffing itself up under her paws. She lifted her head to look up at where the city lights blocked out the stars. "Not much t-t-to say really." She said. She could feel the cold sparking her mind back from it's state of alcoholic fuzziness. "She's be- be- been gone a week n- now."

"Oh Vic," Alonzo said softly, not registering the nickname. "Look, do you need a coat or something? Have you talked to anyone yet? I'm sorry I haven't been around church lately. I mean, beside the state of my soul and all that, I would have liked to be around."

She shook her head at the offer of a coat. "I'm okay." She said, "The church ladies have be- be- been trying to help. Mrs. Spreckels helped me arrange the wake and the funeral. And they've be- be- been good, I just. I can't say anything to them, they- they're too busy chattering to listen."

Pausing, Alonzo nodded. "They try to help. It doesn't always mean they do, yeah? I remember, a group of church ladies rather like that myself actually. They kept talking on and on and trying to feed me. I think I kicked them out eventually. Kindly like, of course."

"Pretty sure I have enough premade suppers in the icebox to feed me for a couple weeks." She said. "D- d- Doesn't help that the boarder left us just after Christmas, so that's the last of my income." She sighed and considered his offer to find her a coat.

He paused a moment. "Last of?" he asked gently, reaching a paw out and rubbing it up and down here back, trying for a soothing motion.

"Mr. Seidensticker dissapeared last month," she said. "Just stopped showing up at the office, and the lease on the office didn't get renewed, so they gave the space to someone else. It's b- bad enough I've lost the job, but with him missing, I can't get another position b-b-because there's no one to give me a reference." She sniffed, "The p-p-police told me not to worry too much about it, b-b-but I don't think they know what hap-" she took a deep breath and pronounced the word carefully. "Happened to him either."

Alonzo blinked wide eyes. That was just as much as a shock as his mother. "Oh, you're just not getting much of a break are you..." he murmured, not unkindly. "Can I do anything to help?"

"I'll- I'll be okay." She says. "I've got a little put by, so I'll manage." She sniffed again, "I just didn't want to b-b-be alone in that house to-tonight."

Swallowing, Alonzo nodded. "Yeah. I should walk you home tonight though, you're in a right state. But how about you stop by a few nights this week? Get out of the house, listen to music. Maybe I can dance with you between sets if you want. Just... to get you out of the house. But I think tonight might be best to turn in."

"That all sounds... good, I guess." She said. She sat up from her huddled position. "I d-d-d-d-don't think any d-d-d-dancing tonight, b-b-b-b-b-but another night p-p-p-perhaps." The thought made her feel warm, and later that evening she would find herself embarrassed by the recollection.

"Hey, let me talk to Lou and then I'll be right out, okay?" he said, rubbing her back again. "Just a second and I'll grab my coat too."
