Leaning back and considering the chandelier, Martin glanced between his pen and the notebook in front of him a few times. It was a slow night, most people heading home after the New Year vacation or still recovering from the festivities. The first day of the New Year was always slow, and it always bothered Martin. He liked the reminder that another year had passed toward death just about as much as he liked his birthday--which was not at all.
His eyes snapped up, glasses glinting in the light as several of Macavity's henches came in, pulling another cat with them. "I know it's past midnight," he drawled. "But what the hell do you think you're doing, dragging the street rift raft in here?"
"But," one of them started. "The boss..."
Martin managed not to roll his eyes. "You go through me first. Now what the hell is this?"

"This," Plato hissed and attempted to jerk his arm out of the henchcat's grip. "Is a he, by the way." It was just one thing after another tonight. First of all that bloody drunk had got him in the jaw so he needed to be taken outside to show him a lesson. Barely moments into the fight he was jumped. Kicking and screaming they practically dragged him through the town. It didn't matter how much Plato yelled, though. It was night and no one bothered to here him. His screams had just become another bump in the night.
Now he glared at the cat behind the counter, instantly knowing he wasn't going to get along with this cat.
"I'm Plato Hiester," The calico practically spat out. "And I demand to be released!"

"Adorable and charming," Martin drawled. "How do you find these cats?"
The hench just shrugged. "He looked like someone the boss might be interested in."
Martin leveled him with a long look over his glasses, still ignoring the struggling tom in question. "So we've, what, added catnapping to our repertoire? When did this happen and why did I not hear of it?" Even as he spoke, he pressed the phone that would open the line to Macavity's penthouse, long their pattern for getting Macavity down to the reception hall.

Plato rolled his eyes. This was getting ridiculous.
"Alright, nice meetin' you and all that wonderful stuff," Plato said and flashed the tom behind the counter a dry, emotionless grin. "I best be going now."
With the speed of a snake, the tom instantly dropped to the floor, pulling his two captors down with him. In the moment that followed the calico pulled his arms free and stood up to his feet. With contempt he looked down at his two would-be kidnappers with disdain. Before they could scramble to their feet he gave one a swift kick to the gut and, the other who though he was lucky to get into a crouching position, he kneed in the face. Tail flickering the tom dusted himself off, looked up at the man behind the counter and turned to make a run for it.

"If you could have done that the whole time, why wait until they got here?" Martin asked with an arched brow as the lift clanged to a stop across the room.
"Smith, there had better be somethin' interestin' goin' on here or I'm skinnin' your hide," Macavity snapped, slamming the lift door back into place behind him, considering the henches still trying to stand and the other tom.

"To be honest I just thought of doing that," Plato had paused and narrowed his eyes on the exit. It couldn't be that easy; the glass door taunted him from across the room. He looked over his shoulder to look at the tom behind the counter and noticed a new cat enter the room. A considerably larger cat enter the room. Probably a considerably stronger cat too. Oh well isn't this just dandy? Slowly the calico turned back around and stepped over the toms on the floor carefully. Coming to a stop he eyed the two toms with the same emotionless expression. "What are you playing at? What do you want?"

"Huh?" Macavity just looked at him before turning back to his desk clerk. "Smith? What do we want?"
"Apparently we're taking cats off the street now," Martin replied, calmly adjusting his glasses.
Macavity just blinked at him again, mass confusion evident in his face. "Come again?" When Martin shrugged he look back at the calico tom. "I just ended up tossed out of bed with my wife. Since Martin's more like talkin' ta a maze than a tom, how about you tell me what the hell is goin' on here?"

Plato shook his head carefully, still leery and distrustful of these two cats. Seriously, what game were they playing?
"I was just mindin' my own business, doin' my thing at the local sailor's pub when these two goons," He gestured to one with a foot. "Come out of nowhere and start halling me away." With a sigh he pinched the bridge of his nose. "Got to say it smells a lot nicer in here though, without all that bleedin' alcohol." He shook his head again.
"Anyway I don't think I'm the best cat to be explainin' this.... this... whatever this is," Plato gave a sigh. "I was the one who was dragged in here after all." He narrowed his eyes at the pair. "Do you seriously not know what I'm doin' here? Not a clue?"

"No, we," Macavity paused, frowning. "Hey, Smith, where were these guys from?"
"I believe they were acquisitions from the distillation of Jones' enterprises," Martin replied calmly.
Macavity frowned. "We will have to have words with these people. Alright," he said, turning to Plato. "So there's been a bit of a misunderstanding. However, was there a reason they seemed... interested in you in the first place?"

Plato shrugged his shoulders and looked down at the toms before looking back at this so far un-named cat.
"I was just beatin' the drunks face in," He said nonchalantly. "Shouldn't have been drinking so much in the first place. He became loud very quickly and started taking swings at the patrons so I stepped up, he swung at me, and so I took him out and proceeded to do my job. That is when these decided to pitch in," He gestured a thumb at the two henchcats.

Macavity arched a brow. "So you're quite the fighter then it looks like? But not fond of drunks?"

Plato winced and rubbed the back of his head, right over his scar. "And who in their right mind would?" He said bitterly and his hand fell back down to his side as he shook his head. "Sorry, it's a bit personal. Drunks are the reason I had that job anyway. No one else would take me in given.... rumors that are flying around."

"Which job, exactly, was that?" Macavity asked, tilting his head to one side and crossing his arms over his chest. "More of, what sorts of rumors were goin' around here?"

"Bouncin'," Plato responded automatically, but winced as he realized he said the rumors part aloud. Maybe he could play it off... "Ah, you know... Kids like me are only on the streets because my parents must have been upset with me enough to dump me off someplace and not even give the me the decency of puttin' me in an orphanage. Or how I ran off from home. Or, my favorite one, that I secretly a wealthy aristocrat who has been tossed to the streets because I was gamblin' and lost all my wealth."

Martin made a face, but made a show of looking over his notes again.
After making an angry gesture for the other gang members who had finally gotten back on their paws to leave, Macavity turned back to the angry looking youth. "No, I think our beggar prince in disguise has already been found and he tends to go by Mistoffelees. You though, which rumor is true?"
