Munkustrap laughed lightly at that, "No need to apologize. Though Dickens does have redeeming works in general I'm inclined to agree with you there. Stevenson I haven't had as much exposure to."

"I am afraid the only exposure to Stevenson I had was from 'The Strange Case of Dr Jeckyll and Mssr Hyde'," she said. "The concept had its merits to be sure, but it was a rather depressing read.

"Ah, see, there we go. I read his Kidnapped, which I have to say I rather enjoyed."

"I will concede to you on that point," she murmured. "And may I as be so bold to assume that you find Dickens' A Christmas Carol one of the most depressing books in existence?"
((I might be coloring her comment on that - although, I didn't find it depressing. I found it boring as hell))

He shrugged, "I don't know if I would call it that after reading Oliver Twist. Or even David Copperfield. Christmas Carol was positively optimistic by comparison. Or the idea behind it was."

"I will concede on that point," she said. "Although, that just encourages me not to read Twist." She paused a moment as she thought. "Doyle is good if you can find his works. I find myself enjoying Sherlock Holmes' adventures."

"True. I do enjoy some of Kipling's writings. Not a lot of them, but his children's short stories are enjoyable."

"Kipling's poetry is good as well," she murmured. "Gunga Din was one of my favorites. And I will agree on his children's stories. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was one of my favorites," she said softly.
((I promise to refrain from quoting Gunga Din. And I might have a copy of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi saved to my favorites))

((I adore Rikki-Tikki-Tavi! I grew up with a cassette tape of it and a hard copy on our front bookshelf))
"Those are good ones, though I have always been struck by his collection of Just So Stories. My personal favorite may be How the Elephant Got His Trunk."
((I figured "The Cat Who Walks By Himself" wouldn't be as suitable in a world where everyone is feline, but I do adore that one.))

((Nor would the Jungle Book since Sher Khan is so not loved. I have Rikki on VHS and DVD, and a hard bound novel that has the story in it. My bookcases are throwing up because I have so many books. I remember getting odd looks when I took a copy of the "Hot Zone" by Richard Preston in one day to read for pleasure.))
"Is that the one where he sticks his short nose down and a crocodile pulls it, stretching it out?" she asked, trying to recall the story in question. "It sounds passably familiar."

Munkustrap nodded, "Yes that's the one. Rather a severe warning toward those who ask too many questions, but it worked out in the end."

She nodded in agreement. Not a story she would have thought an attorney would have liked but well, to each their own. At least the elephant was a tamer warning, as compared to the Palais Garnier's version. Keep the hand at the level of your eyes indeed.
She blushed when she realized she had murmured that aloud.

"Keep your hand at the level of your eye," she said softly. "It was a warning in the Palais... Telling you to watch what you say because there was someone there who.. well.." Her gaze grew distant for a moment. "I must apologize.. It was mostly a story but.." She gave a small half-hearted shrug.
((I couldn't resist, given her last name XD))

The tabby considered before finally nodding, "It makes sense, really. In a town like this as well as in the Palais."
((I like the allusion.))
