Genghis Selkirk stood at his desk in one of his warehouses, the door to the simple room ajar. His suit coat was neatly draped over a plain wooden chair to one side and his shirtsleeves were rolled up to his elbows. The holster he usually carried under his arm was looped over a chair in easy reach, the gun resting in it.
A map of the city and a set of shipping manifests were on the desk before him. His brown tail twitched in irritation as he made a couple of marks on the map. There had been a few skirmishes among the gangs recently and he didn't care for it. He'd have to see this matter dealt with.

Clara knocked the back of one paw against the door frame before entering. "You look concerned," she remarked, noticing his tail. "Here's those reports you asked for on the profits and news about movements."

The Siamese looked up, taking the offered papers, "Thank you, Clara. And...concerned may not be the right word." He set the papers down by the manifests before pointing to the map, "Here, here, here, and here, the gangs have had skirmishes, some with outside groups, some with each other, in the last two days. The ones with outside groups I'm not concerned about but this one, and this one," he tapped two "x"s, "need to be sorted out, and soon. We can't have them fighting among themselves."

"Not to be obtuse, but wouldn't it be better for some of those smaller gangs to take each out?" she asked. "There's no way they can survive long term and maybe we should see who the stronger would be. Unless you want to see about keeping the center of power scattered still."

"I'm more concerned with the fact that they were supposed to be in the midst of a truce. If they'll do that at this time..." He shook his head, "I have no trouble letting them fight it out among themselves for a while, there are a few too many for us to keep tabs on at this point. I just want to make sure they're clear on the fact that when there is a truce there is a truce."

Tucking her hair back to make sure it stayed where it was supposed to and not in her face, Clara peered at the map. "A truce is a terrible thing to get wrong. Though, perhaps if they are stupid enough to forgo a peace they deserve what they get--which one can only hope would be annihilation."

Genghis considered and then nodded, "Granted. We'll let it play out for a while, but it will need to be dealt with eventually."

"Eventually," she agreed, perching herself on the edge of the table. "But they're rather small overall."

Genghis nodded, picking up the papers regarding movements she'd brought him, "Anything of particular note I should hear about beyond what the actual papers say?"

"The owner of the Fishbone is back in town," she replied. "Though he doesn't seem to stay terribly long usually. Other than that, the Hidden Paw's reach has expanded since Bustopher Jones died. It's like he had a free pass into most of Jones' holdings."

"Thames is back then? Well, I'd like someone to keep an eye on him, make sure he's not doing anything that could cause problems for us." He frowned at the other bit of news, "A free pass to all of Jones' holdings. There's only a pawful of ways he could have gotten that without bloodshed, beyond the death of Bustopher Jones I mean. Do we have anyone available to look into that?"

"Not anycat I can think of at the moment," she paused to consider. "I'll look into it though. But considering the fact he plays his identity close to his chest, how much do you think you'll be able to find out?" Glaring at the hem of her skirt, she made it sit right. "Besides, how do you know he did it without more bloodshed?"

"A large number of deaths would have appeared in the paper, or at least been whispered among the gangs. I've yet to hear of much." He considered, "I'll see what I can find out about Jones' heir in the legitimate circles. See if it's possible to trace back from there."

"Having access to the heir would explain how easily he got all the benefits of Jones' death," Clara mused. "He's new to the social scene, isn't he?"

"Very. There's little known about him other than his relation to Jones. He was rarely seen, and much of society was surprised when he turned up as the heir."
