The doctor considered that for a long moment, nodding very slightly, "Yes, I can imagine what you think when you hear the word 'Father', but you're not him, Macavity. There's no reason to think that becoming a father will turn you into him, either." He paused, "What can I do?"

"Not sure," Macavity replied. "I just... I think I brought this to you before anycat else. I just need to 'et my head sorted."

"On the medical side of things, this is not my area, but I know a few doctors I can recommend to you and the lady. On the friends and support side, you know you can always come to me if you need anything."

"Thanks," Mac replied. "I'm goin' have ta figure out a way ta tell my brothers," he started musing aloud. "And... what ta do with society." He glanced at Cohen, something like panic behind his eyes again the more he thought about this. "What should I do? Society will try ta eat her alive."

"The safest thing is to make her look less like a mistress. But I also do not recommend doing that for the sake of the kit alone. Tell me about her?"

"She's not a mistress," Macavity replied quickly, offended on her behalf but not toward Cohen. "Griddlebone. Do you remember New Years?"

"Somewhat, yes. I remember leaving before midnight after the host left," he remarked quietly. "And I know she's not, but that's not how they'll see it."

"I did leave before midnight, didn't I?" he winced slightly. "It was because she showed up. I'd been waitin' all night and she showed up. But that's just the thin'--I drop things left and right for her."

"You love her," it wasn't a question.

"Yes," Macavity agreed without hesitation. "I do. Very much."

"May I ask why society would eat her alive?"

"She has no last name, comes from the docks, bearin' my child out of wedlock," Macavity started ticking off.

Cohen whistled lowly, "That is quite the list. Is there a way to discover if she had a last name at one time? And the out of wedlock part can be remedied. As I said earlier, it is not the best reason,but..."

For a long moment Macavity blinked at the doctor as if the thought had never even crossed his mind. "You mean... marry her?"

The doctor looked at him over the top of his glasses, "Yes, Macavity, that is what I mean. Admittedly marrying an unknown will spark the rumor mill, but it would be far less cruel to the both of you than for her to have your kits out of wedlock."
