Maggie blinked in bewilderment and she struggled to think up a reply to that. "O-oh..." She sat for a moment and then burst out. "I'm sorry, Phillip. I didn't think-I'm so sorry-I didn't mean-Oh, cat-dirt." She took a deep breath to calm herself, and smiled timidly. "I'm sure she is a wonderful queen, for having raised you to become the tom you are."

"Yeah, she's great," Philip said with an uncomfortable shrug. "I mean, we never much made it easy for her but she did well." Which was all bluff, since his devotion to his mother was really only matched by his dislike of his father.

Her smile fell a little. "Ah, well. As my uncle Fred says: boys will be boys. They were the two oldest brothers, you know. Always fighting, driving Grandmama up the drapes. My mother, she was the youngest and the mediator for them during the early years." She desperately hoped that the topic change was not too obvious or odious.

Philip blinked at that, not entirely sure how to react. "Well, I'm not entirely sure it was a boy thing," he mumbled, looking to the side.

"A sibling thing then?" She tried to hold her smile but failed miserably and sighed. "I'm sorry, Phillip. Would you like to talk about something else?"

He rolled his shoulders. "Look, it's not like my family is a taboo subject here, it's fine so long as you're fine. But, yeah, okay, let's move on." With that he glanced away, unsure what exactly he was feeling. Soon enough they settled into another topic though, and he slowly started to relax.
