Tugger took a deep breath, fiddling with his hat outside the Fishbone. Grids would understand. Grids would be easy. He stepped inside. "Milady? Are you in?" he called to the empty room.

"In the kitchen, Tugger." Milady called from the back room where she was cleaning the glasses from the night before. Her daily work was taking a bit longer, but she'd done it on her own before and was remembering the efficiency of that. Even with that she was growing tired more frequently now, for a reason she couldn't comprehend.

Tugger smiled shyly and stepped into the back room. Her back was to him. "I've, ah, got something to show you." As soon as he said it, he realized how horribly it could be interpreted and quickly added, "Not a creepy thing. Kind of a cool thing."

Grids turned, drying her paws on a dishtowel. Her jaw dropped at the sight of his uniform, "Y-you...so this is why you quit?"

He looked away, ran a paw through his headfur, and brought his eyes back to her. "Yeah." His expression softened. "I'm...sorry I didn't tell you."

She looked him over, "It looks good on you. I wouldn't wander around down here in it too much, though." It was her way of saying she understood and wasn't too angry with him about it all.

He beamed at the first words out of her mouth, and it was highly doubtful he even heard the warning. His tail swished excitedly from side to side. "Handsome? Yeah, I mean, of course." His ears flickered. "Not so sure Mac will think so, but hey, it's a paycheck."

"It is a paycheck. Just...be careful, hm?"

"I will, Grids," he replied, crossing his heart. "Besides, it's what I've always wanted. I just didn't know it. Hah --- a lot of m' buddies think I've changed sides or somethin'. But I'm from that side o' the street. I won't go turnin' folk in for little things, and I'm not turnin' on my friends either. I just...wanna protect, ya know?"

She smiled gently, "Seems to be a trait you and your brother share. Either way, do be careful."

It was funny how a word of praise from Grids made him glow. "Yer like the big sis I never had. Here's hopin' my idiot brother makes it official..." he said the latter bit under his breath, hiding it with a cough. "Speakin' of Mac...I'm really not sure how he's gonna take this."

She arched an eyebrow at him, "That's a nasty cough you've got there..." With a shrug she picked up a rag and moved into the main room to do some cleaning, "I certainly can't speak for him, but I can't see him being especially comfortable with it."

"Well," Tugger resisted the urge to light up out of habit, "He'll get used to it, I guess. Better to apologize than ask permission when it comes to him."

Grids shrugged, "Seems you've been doing a lot of that of late." It wasn't quite a condemnation, but her tone was perhaps a little too idle.

He saw a flash of Misto's face...and his heart sank into his stomach. "Well, Mac needs a little skin taken off his knees ev'ry now and then. The ones I consider real bad mistakes with were the cats that ain't Mac."
