Cori offered Tugger a nod in recognition and then turned to Macavity, speaking lowly enough that his voice would be heard by the two of them and hopefully only the two of them, "What the hell is going on, Mac?"

Macavity moved them over slightly, leaving Mistoffelees and Tugger alone to discuss what they willed. "He decided he needed a job and to do somethin' with his life. That's what he chose," he said, voice nearly a growl.

"Your brother choice a job as a police officer and he thought that was a good idea? Is he out of his damn mind?" Cori hissed, glancing toward the other two toms.

"He's been out of his damn mind for years," Macavity replied, lighting his second cigarette of the last ten minutes. His fur was standing more on end than usual. "Not much ta be done about it though," he sighed. "I told him ta do somethin' on his own and he did. Just wish to hell it had been somethin' else. Now then," he said, returning to business and pulling Coricopat slightly further away. "Some things I want ta discuss with you..."

Tugger's tail swished behind him as he walked over to Misto, and he felt like a kit again. There were...a lot of regrets about how he'd acted towards Misto in the last few months. "Not a maskerade, I'm afraid. I'm a cop now." He pointed to the golden shield over his left breast before sheepishly saying, "It says so on my badge."

"Yes," Mistoffelees said, tugging on the blue tie he was wearing. "I can see that. It's sort of why I was hoping it was a maskerade." He looked Tugger over again, ears flickering. "You're seriously a cop now?"

Tugger rolled on the balls of his feet. Why did this have to be so hard? "Yeah," he said, swallowing. "But!" he exclaimed, "I'm not a good one! I mean...not much is going to change." He felt himself begin to ramble. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I should have."

"I can somewhat see why you did not," he managed. "I can only assume this is what you've been up to for the last while." He glanced over at Coricopat briefly and back to Tugger, aware that that was an issue they had never addressed. After all, he had walked in with the other cat.

Tugger's smile had dropped somewhat, and his tail was drooping. It was easy to be all cock and bull with his brother or Coricopat, but not Misto. "Yeah. This is why I've been such a...basketcase." He saw Misto glance over at Cori and wondered if he could pretend he didn't take the hint until his mind could process it all the way.

Mistoffelees hadn't actually meant to drop that hint, looking for reassurance without thinking about it. "It explains some things," he murmured, attention firmly on Tugger. "It just... wonder if you thought this through is all. From what I've encountered of the Commissioner he does not seem inclined to let things go. I wonder if you'll be able to play both sides as much as you think you can. I'm worried, alright?"

Tugger's tail swished behind him. "I know. I know it's risky. I don't care about the choices cats make for themselves --- the liquor, the whores," he paused, swallowed uncomfortably, "livin' partners --- that's up to cats and those're theirs. I just wanna be in a position to help the ones who get in trouble, y'know?"

Mistoffelees' own ears flickered. "Somewhat," he said finally, to Tugger's last question. "I can understand it but god, did you make things hard on yourself." He shifting, turning over Tugger's other statements. "Besides, living with someone is hardly illegal," he mumbled after another moment.

Tugger cackled. "I'm the dark horse! Life isn't exciting if it's not a little hard..." he trailed off. "No. It's not illegal," he said, voice soft. "But you know what I'm talkin' about and I just...dammit, why is this so hard?" He ran a paw over his face. "That was my really awful way of letting you know I'm okay with...you, and your choices and what makes you happy." He offered a weak smile. "But I still want you to be safe."

He blinked slightly in surprise at that before nodded. "I intend to be very safe," he said finally. "The only person to ever actively attack me is dead now, so that should help." He didn't answer why things were so hard, hyper aware of asking the same thing of Coricopat, or at least asking himself that in regard to the other.

Tugger stiffened. For one crisp, clear moment he could feel a glass edge sliding across his back. He looked around at his brother's minimal decorations, thought about the tub of lard sitting dead in his chair. "I know what that's like. It does help."
