"I beg to differ. I'm seein' clearly for the first time." His gaze flickered. "I'd rather do this than die a fat drunkard in 'n easy chair."

"So you'll die youn' and pretty in the streets?" Mac drawled.

"If that's what it takes," Tugger replied, and gestured. "You think I don't worry about you? If I go, at least you'll hear about it. If you disappear again, I won't know 'till your cement shoes rot away."

"You kiddin'?" Macavity shook his head. "I'm all public figure like now. I'm sure you'd hear about it. Sides, at least my side gives me the inside scoop."

"I've got friends on the inside, too." Tugger thought about what he'd just said. "I've got the inside scoop on the outside...friends on the inside-...outside." He shook his head to clear the disagreement. "Hence why I'm not goin' around ratting on all my old buddies."

"Speakin' of your old buddies, you might want ta consider bein' very clear with them of that. Most shoot first and ask after. It's not terribly effective but you might want ta be on the lookout."

"I'm not a kit, Mac. I know the score. I know who I can trust."

Macavity scoffed. "Sure you do. Sure you ain't a kit. You do much ta prove otherwise?"

"Maybe not yet," Tugger admitted. "But somethin' about going to the academy and gettin' a real job says I'm on the right path."

Macavity's ears flickered back. "The right path is lon' and hard, baby brother."

"I understand," Tugger replied, and took a step towards his older brother. "But I've gotta do somethin', and if this's the only way to go then...it's the only way. Please, Mac, give me a chance. This is the only thing that's...this is the only thing that's mine, that I did on my own. That's gotta be worth somethin'."

Arms crossed over his chest, Macavity considered him a long moment before digging through his pockets and coming up with his cigarettes and lighter. "So lon' as you stick ta it," he muttered into the cigarette.
(('Bout time to have some other guests show up?))

Coricopat ascended the stairs, glancing at the other cat with him before opening the door to the ballroom and allowing them both passage. The mottled tom froze at the sight of a cat in police regalia, his entire body tensing and his feet poised to turn and leave quickly. He finally decided there wasn't an immediate threat from the officer and started across the ballroom, not hiding his presence, both his shoes and the walking stick that he carried (mostly for show now) tapped on the floor.

Tugger turned at the sound of other cats approaching. His grin thinned a little when he saw them. "Hey, Misto." He inclined his head at the other. "Coricopat."

Mistoffelees had stopped by the door for several long moments on seeing Tugger before trailing after Coricopat, adjusting the jacket he'd been informed by the other he was wearing. He still wished he could just get away with shirtsleeves and a vest. "Tugger," he greeted a bit warily. "It's not a maskerade is it?"
Macavity gave Coricopat a long suffering look, going over and clapping him on the shoulder.
