Even though he was in his office, Sonya was not working. Rather, his head was on the desk in front of him, and he was trying to sort himself out.
He had come into the station that morning to ashen faces. Brachen Myre had been broken out, only to have his body returned shortly thereafter. Somecat had broken him out just to kill him? Sonya supposed that made sense, though he did not much care for the idea.

Vala walked into Sonya's office. The anxiety from the cathunt and the trial had faded into a sort of dull surprise when she found out that Myre was dead. "Sir?" She softly knocked on the door as she entered, file-folder in hand. "I have the examiner's report. Myre's throat was slit. Straight razor...just like the chilled cats on the docks a few months back." She hated this, one problem solved by another, unsolved problem.

Sonya had sat up when she entered, and blinked for a long minute when she gave the report. "Like the cats from several months ago?" he said and considered for a moment crying. Instead, he poured himself another cup of coffee. "So, our solved killer was killed by our unsolved one?" Some days, he hated this town.

"But why would a cat break him out just to slice him? I mean, he was going to hang anyway."

"Personal vengeance?" Sonya offered. "The desire to do it yourself."

"But why go to the trouble to take him out of prison? If you had the resources to gain access...why waste time removing your mark?"

Sonya shrugged, taking a long swallow of the coffee. "I hardly claim to understand every corner of the criminal mind."

Vala blushed slightly. "Well, of course, sir but..." she looked for the right words, "it's...interesting, don't you think?"

A pause and then he nodded. "Yes, it is, but I have no idea what to do with, or about it."

She shrugged. "Sorry, sir, just thinking out loud." She placed the file on his desk. "Comissioner Vlask, out of curiosity, has anycat claimed the body?"

Sonya blinked, and shook his head. "No."

"Might be worth keeping an eye on," Vala replied. "...Sir, did it, the verdict I mean, sit right with you?"

Sonya glanced up at her and frowned. "He murdered cats, a child included. Maybe some of the others might have had it coming to them... but an innocent woman and a child. And those are just the murders we know of. Maybe he really was insane but..." he shrugged. "There was too much blood on his paws anyway. I am not sure what other outcome could have been achieved."

Vala nodded. "I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was worried I was just feeling bloodthirsty like everyone else but I guess that's part of what keeps us alive, right?"

Sonya glanced down, though he nodded. "Yes. It is what keeps us alive." Though sometimes he wished it was not.
