Coricopat entered the house quietly, locking the door behind him. He shrugged out of his hat and coat, hanging them up, and set his briefcase down under the hall table. He looked toward the front room and considered just going to bed--he really didn't want to deal with anything else tonight. There hadn't been anything he could have done differently, but it still hurt to have been able to do nothing.
After another long moment of hesitation, the mottled tom finally entered the living room. He paused, eying the couch before going and fetching a book from the shelf and curling up on the couch with the book in paw. The less thinking he had to do at the moment the happier he would be. His tail curled around him and his ears lay back as he settled in to try and read some.

Mistoffelees hesitated for a long moment in the doorway, cup of tea in paw. Quietly, he padded over, setting it on the table in front of Coricopat, and gently sitting down beside him.

Cori glanced at the smaller tom and then at the tea before returning to his book for a moment. He swallowed, realizing that he'd been staring at the same word for the last minute and a half. Closing the book with a snap, he set it on the side table with a soft growl of frustration.

Misto swallowed, one ear flinching back at the book closing, but he managed to keep his face smooth, watching Coricopat still. He was waiting for the other to speak if he wanted to, if not he would hope to be able to support him just by being there and supplying tea.

Cori picked up the teacup, his paws trembling slightly, "I...I won that damned case."

Swallowing, Misto nodded, not really understanding the significance of that. "But it's over now, yeah?" he said, as softly as he could.

Cor took a drink of the tea, setting the cup down before he spilled it, "Yes. It is. Damn it to hell."

Misto swallowed again, watching the mottled tom. He wanted to reach out, and give some sort of comfort to the other but he had no idea how, or if it would even be welcomed.

Cori leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and his head in his paws, "I knew this was going to happen...I just, there had to be more I could have done."

Misto swallowed, before very carefully putting a paw on Coricopat's shoulder. "I'm sorry," he said softly.

Cor managed not to startle at that touch, shaking his head, "I just...I hate not being able to help with this."

"Yeah," Misto said softly, considered and then rubbed small circles around the other's shoulder. "but you did the best you could?"

"For all the good it did. And then to have to tell Mac..." He shook his head, running a paw through his headfur.

He hesitated. "Macavity?"

The lawyer sighed, nodding, "Munkustrap thought it would be best if I told him. I'm not sure he just didn't want to have to be the one to tell his brother he'd lost."
