Brachen had returned to his apartment, fully intending to pack up his things and leave Felidae. He needed to go someplace far away from cats - any cats, and deal with his problems in solitude, rather than drag the few he cared about down with him.
The next morning, he'd had his bags packed and ready to go, the few sparse items he'd taken with him from the South, and he went down to the intersection near the Police Station to the little cafe he liked to eat at...
And he'd heard a crash, a deafening sound of metal on metal and tires spinning on pavement...saw the two Fords locked together. Just a little accident. Just a little fender-bender. The queen and her kits climbed out all right, talked to the driver of the other car. The tom was good about it, asked them if they were okay. Just a little accident. The kits were a little shaken. It was nothing to worry about. They were all all right. Everyone was okay.

Sarah couldn't believe what had happened to the car, and when Andy got off his shift, she'd explain what happened. She could hear her checkbook groaning at the thought, and sighed in irritation. All because somecat thought it was a good idea to run the stoplight.
Her kits came running up.
"All right," Sarah said with a sigh, "you finished your schoolwork?"
"Yes," Peter replied with a smile.
Sarah rounded on Ester, the little queen.
"Yes, mommy."
"Good," she patted them lightly on the shoulder. "Go get ready for bed."
"But we wanna see daddy!"
Sarah felt something fall in her, combined with a sickening sensation of worry she was familiar with. Cops wives got used to that feeling. "Daddy won't be back until late tonight, and you've got school tomorrow."
Their faces fell, but they understood, running off to go get ready for bed.
That was when the doorbell rang. Sarah's ears perked and flickered in the direction, wondering who it could be. She went over and opened it. Maybe Andy was back early? He always forgot his key at the Station...
She opened the door and the last thing she saw was a glimpse of cool blue eyes and the flicker of a knife.

"It's all all right now, Marie. You understand, right? Things are exactly like they were and exactly how they were supposed to be. Everyone's dead but me, but you survived. That's the way it was supposed to be. I shouldn't have survived and you should have, but now that we're together we'll both be okay. As long as we have each other we'll be okay." He hauled the little queen further onto his blood soaked shoulder - she wasn't older than five, she was Marie's age and that made her Marie. And they were together now. Everything was okay.
Ester wasn't sure she'd understood, all she knew was that mommy and Peter were hurt real bad and they were sleeping now, and she wanted to escape the tom's grasp but she was afraid to...he smelled like copper and the crazies, so she said nothing and waited for mommy to wake up and come tell him he was taking the wrong kit.
