Mac blinked at him, looking a little lost. "What do you mean...?"

"I...It's nothing, Mac. But I can't..." he looked at the space between them. "I can't. Not if you're with anothercat. And I can't ask you to leave her." He would have been horrible, selfish to ask Mac to leave someone normal, someone healthy...for the bright and shining mess that was him.

"Ask? But if I'm offerin'..." Mac looked at the space between them, still frowning.

Brachen shook his head, ears flat, going every which way as he thought. "No, Mac," he said quietly. He felt himself going down, and maybe Mac could save him from himself...but Mac had built so much. "You give too much of yourself when the inclination strikes you, and I won't be responsible for you tearing down everything you have."

Again Macavity just blinked at him. "What are you sayin'?" he asked. "I want ta help you, I wouldn't be tearin' things done. 'Sides, it'd be worth it for you."

Brachen smirked. "Mac, you're talking about leaving your girl for an unstable psychotic with known murderous tendencies. Just picture it for a while, Mac. It was fine before but now," his voice faltered, a little afraid, "I've lost my ability to control myself. What would life with us look like for the first couple months? You think you can change me? But it wouldn't be long before I become a liability, just like I did to the last boss. The scary thing is that instead of putting a hit out on me, you might just let me get away with it. Again and again, until I go down and drag you with me." His grin became all at once harsher and weaker. "I've seen the light go from so many cat's eyes, but I can't bring myself to tear you down."

Macavity froze, drawing back. "It wouldn't have ta go that way," he said softly. "And besides which, the hell else am I supposed ta do?"

"...I think you should leave, Mac."

For a long moment the larger tom just stared at him. "What?" he asked softly.

Brachen was gone from himself. Slowly, he turned his back on Mac and walked to the window, where moonlight poured in from outside. He pulled out the knife he kept with him, that strange, curving Indian blade, watched the blue-white glisten off the blade and the stains he hadn't had the time or energy to clean off yet. "Please, Mac, leave." Any longer, and Mac would be more determined to throw his life away...any longer and Brachen would want to let him.

Macavity's eyes followed him. "Alright," he said finally, softly, and his voice was pained. "But promise me not ta do any harm tonight. Please. Ta others or especially ta yourself."

Brachen's eyes stayed on the knife a moment longer than was necessary, before he slowly put it on the table to his right. "Don't worry, I'm putting down my poison for tonight." A beat. "You should, too."

Macavity looked at him for a long moment longer. "If you want me ta leave, I will," he said softly, turning for the door. "Take care of yourself, Brachen."

Brachen ran a paw over the three cuts on his face, felt his fingers catch on the hardening edges. "You, too, Mac."

Macavity gave him one more hard look and then retreated, closing the door softly behind him.
((Exit Macavity))
