Macavity growled, slamming a paw into the wall, shaking it. "Damn it!" he said again. "Do you know what happened? My god damn mother showed up ta ask me to hunt down the murderer and that murderer is you? Do you have any idea what...?" he trailed off with a snarl, shaking his head.

Brachen shuddered. Mac's mother? And the information sent a jolt of fear through him. "Mac... You can't..." He felt something tight and hurt. "You're going to turn me in?"

Still swearing, Macavity hit the wall again before calming himself down, reaching a paw up to slick back his headfur though everlasting cat knew he was still shaking hard. "No," he said. "God, no Brachen, I couldn't... But damn it, that means I'm puttin' you against my family and..." and as much as he might hate them, they were his blood and he owned them loyalty despite everything.

Brachen was staring wide-eyed at the ground. He'd been caught by the one cat he cared to see him sane...and he realized he'd gone too far this time. "What do you want me to do?"

"I don't know!" Macavity yelled and the sound was torn from him, as if it pained him to say it. God, he was so angry but this was Brachen and didn't that mean something? Wasn't that why he was angry?

Brachen stayed quiet for a long time. Finally, he willed himself to speak. "...Mac, do you know the story of the fox and the scorpion?"

"The one where the fox offered him passage across the river, and stabbin' him anyway, the scorpion said it was just his nature?" Macavity asked, sagging against the wall and finally looking at the other tom.

"Yeah, that's the one." Brachen walked over to one of the large windows of his appartment, stared at the neighboring gardens and park beyond. "I used to think I could just put it down if I ever cared enough to or wanted to live a normal life. The others made sense, they put me off balance. There was something I could relate it to, understand, and it was like something took me over. That queen? I was myself again, I knew I needed to stop myself and I couldn't."

"Others?" Macavity asked, since as far as he knew there was only the murder of the priest.

Brachen's eyes widened and he gasped. He couldn't believe he'd slipped up like that.

Macavity had been hoping--for a moment anyway--that Brachen had meant the others in the past, but his expression told him far too clearly otherwise. "Damn it!" he hollered, almost hitting the wall again. "Are you out of your damn mind?" And why didn't you come and talk ta me?

"Yeah," Brachen said simply, quietly in the face of Mac's yowl. "Yeah. I am out of my mind."

Macavity froze for a long moment. "Don't say that..."

"You're right. What else is there to call it?" He smiled, and the grin was too reminiscent of the way he used to be.

"No, Brachen, I..." Mac started, taking a step forward and holding out his arms, hesitating. He couldn't seem to decide whether to retreat or gather the smaller into his arms.
