Whistling under his breath, Macavity walked along the hall between his office and the dining room, hands in his pockets. It was past the lunch rush and he was hoping the place would be empty enough.

Walking briskly down the hall outside the dining room, Maggie's ears twitched to and fro. She'd taken Mistoffelees' warning to heart, though it meant she was far more paranoid than she needed to be and her sleep patterns had suffered the last couple of days. She really hoped that her uncles hadn't noticed. They had enough on their plates as it was.
She paused, hearing a clatter from behind her and she turned to look back, her heart beginning to beat a little faster.

Macavity came around the corner then, noticing the queen looking the other way. "You're not lost, are you?"

Uttering an embarrassingly high-pitched screech, Maggie jumped nearly three feet in the air. Landing on a nearby curtain, she clawed her way so far up the drapes she was nearly at the ceiling before she realized what she was doing. Unfortunately, her claws froze into position and all she could do was stare, wild-eyed and panting, at the rather familiar-looking tom who had startled her so badly. "Wha...I...Bast and Anubis...Pardon?!"

Macavity had jumped back at the sound of the screech, and was blinking, wide eyed, up at the queen atop the curtains. "I... are you alright?" he asked, for lack really of anything better to ask, the fur all along his spine standing up. Thankfully, he was wearing enough layers it wasn't obvious to anyone looking at him.

Breathing raggedly, Maggie nodded in the affirmative, trying desperately to calm her rapidly beating heart. "Y-yes...Yes, I'm all right. You just startled me, sir, that's all." And, oh fur and feathers, is that Mr. Hollister?!

His eyes tracked how far up she had jumped, as he smoothed a paw across the top of his slicked back hair. "That's a high way ta be startled up," he replied. "Miss...?"

"Howe. Maggie Howe." She paused for a moment, still breathing heavily. "I work in the kitchens with my uncles."

"Yeah, I recognize you now," he replied. "Just hadn't placed where you were from yet..." he paused another moment. "Well, Miss Howe, you want me ta fetch a ladder for you?"

Gulping audibly as she looked down, Maggie nodded sheepishly. "Yes, please."

Macavity blinked again and then slipped away, finding one of the cupboards on the floor, where he thought he'd last seen a ladder--and thankfully was right. He pulled it back after her, laying it against the wall. "Now, I'm figurin' you can 'et yourself down and I don't have ta come back up after you...?"

She nodded again, her cheeks flaming in embarrassment. "I can." She forced her claws to unclench and gingerly gripped the ladder. Shakily she descended down the ladder and slowly stood up straight to face her employer. "Thank you, Mr. Hollister. I don't really know why I reacted quite that badly, but I have been rather jumpy as of late. I apologize if I startled you."

His paws waved out in front of him. "It's fine. What has 'ot you so jumpy of late though? Everythin' alright?"

Her smile was tired and more than a bit strained. "I haven't been sleeping well, since..." She hesitated for a moment, considering what she should say. She didn't want to lie to her boss, but would he believe her if she told him the truth? "...may I speak freely, sir?"

He blinked for a long moment. "Is there a reason you wouldn't speak freely?" he asked. "Go right on ahead."
