Ricky was stretched out on the floor of the living room, a dime novel in front of him again. He spent his time at home reading over those when he got the chance. Sure, some might call it a waste of time, but they were what he could get instead of the books he was angling for--The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was a book he was saving a couple pennies a day for. His ears flickered toward the room where he was pretty sure his eldest brother still at home was. He wasn't certain though. He'd gotten done with his paper sales a lot earlier than usual today, and hadn't had any errands to run for His Nibs so he'd come home and stretched out to read.

Sure enough, Jack had been sleeping in that room. Last night at The Chrysalis had gone on into the wee hours of the morning - he'd had a drink with some of the band members once they'd played the last set of the evening. As a result, Jack had been passed out in bed well past noon. He finally appeared, leaning on the door frame, stifling a yawn. "Hey, Ricky, done with your papers already?"

"Wouldn't be home if I wasn't." The younger tom replied, turning another page of his book.

Jack chuckled. "Silly me," he said, and walked over to his brother. "Whatcha readin'?"

He held up the book, a novel about a kid detective. "It's pretty good. You sleepin' th' day away again?"

Jack nodded, and smiled a little sheepishly. "Yeah, late night at work yesterday. Or, really, early morning I s'pose."

Ricky shook his head, "I still don' know why y' do somethin' as takes y' out so late."

Jack grinned. "'Cause it's fun, that's why. How many cats can say they love their job? I can," he said happily.

Ricky shrugged, "Still, half th' day's gone by th' time you get up."

"True. More fun things happen in the later half of the day, I find, though, so I don't really feel like I'm missin' out on anythin'," Jack said, also shrugging.

"yeah, but in th' mornin's y' avoid th' problems that happen in a lot a this city when it gets dark." Ricky pointed out, having set his book aside and rolled onto his side to look up at his brother.

Jack nodded. "Also true. Just gotta keep your wits about you, an' you'll avoid, well, most of the trouble, anyhow. Not that I'm advising you to run around on the streets late at night, tho'. Mayhaps once you're older an' can hold your own a bit better."

Ricky scowled up at his older brother. "I c'n handle m'self."

"'Course you can. If you're ganged up on by several big toms tho', you might be in a spot of trouble. There's some mean types about late at night," Jack said, simply.

Ricky still didn't look thrilled, this was sounding a hell of a lot like his conversations with Taradan and he wasn't pleased with that. "Yeah, well, I don' go out then so it don't matter."
