Munkustrap sighed as he stepped off the bus, turning toward home. His paw closed a little more tightly around the handle of his worn briefcase and he bent his head to better shield his face from the wintry breeze that nipped at his features. It had been a long day. Hell, who was he kidding? It'd been a long year, and it had barely begun.
He finally reached the walk to the house and paused, frowning. It was never this dark at this hour. He approached the front door, opening it and stepping inside, his father wasn't home--usually--so he took the risk of calling to his younger brother. "Tug? You home?" He shed his coat and hat, reaching for the switch for the entry and stairs' light.

Tugger was home, he'd returned about an hour before his brother and found himself facing much the same situation. There was the sound of a match flaring, and a moment later, he came out of the kitchen holding a candle, taking care to keep the flame well away from his mane and headfur. "I'm here." he heard the empty click as Munkstrap tested the light switch, "Electric's out," a pause, "an' by the look of the neighbors, it's just us."

"Great, just bloody wonderful." Munkustrap muttered. "Just what this week needed. Telephone and gas still on?"

Tugger nodded, before realising it might not be that easy for his brother to see him in the candlelight. "Gas is. I ain't tested the phone. But yeah, we ain't about to freeze as well at least. I dunno what's up with it."

"I'll check tomorrow. Would have sworn we paid that bill..." he muttered.

Tugger frowned at that, something stirring in his memory bank. "It wouldn't be that one that's bin' sat on the sideboard f'almost a month would it?" he used the candle light his way across the room and picked up the envelope in question from the back of the sideboard, handing it to his brother.

Munkustrap took the envelope, slicing it open and swearing. "Yeah, this would be the one."

Tugger's ears flattened a little, "I thought y'knew about it."

Munkus shook his head. "No, but there's not much to be done about that fact now." He checked the amount, growling. Great, there went the incidentals this month.

Tugger's ears flattened a bit more, "Well I thought you'd left it there on purpose, t'remind you or somethin'. Else I'd've said somethin' sooner." a pause, "How much is it?"

"Twelve twenty-seven." Munkus replied sighing. It could be worse, but still, after paying Jones they didn't have that to spare.

Tugger frowned, "We're all out? How much did that new stove cost?"

"A little more than the mortgage payments used to, Mac had given us just enough to cover that. But we've got the incidentals money so...we should be alright, just may have to deal with this at the beginning of next moth as well.."

Tugger's frown deepened, "Mac gave us what?" he rather missed the second part of his brother's words."

"Enough to cover the bit of the stove we couldn't afford. I'd rather owe him than have another creditor." Munkus replied.
