Macvity was spread out over Brachen's couch, having decided to not risk dealing with his father that night, and having no business with the gang that night. He'd flipped through several of the other tom's books, and was now just mentally working on tallying the amount of money he had, and how much more until he could safely set up an apartment and get Tugger inside of it.

Brachen was staggering through the street, covered in the blood of the hitters that had been sent to take him out. He didn't know if the gang would go to the cops after they realized the assassination attempt failed, but he knew he couldn't chance it. Once the city found out, everycat would be on edge, looking for someone convenient to blame.
He tried to keep his coat bunched tight over his suit, anything to keep a random passerby from noticing the splatters. Dammit. He hadn't even had time to hide the bodies - if they didn't get him for the crime he hadn't committed, they'd get him for killing the hitters. He swallowed and almost choked on the wild NOISES in his own head; screaming, animalistic fury that kept telling him that the only way to survive was to cut loose.
He staggered into his apartment, fumbling with the keys. Casting his eyes upwards, he saw Mac sitting on his couch...and suddenly couldn't decide whether he'd wanted him there or not.

Mac glanced up, starting to greet the other and stopping, looking the other tom over. He paused for a long moment, taking in his appearance before swinging his legs over and rising. "What happened?" he asked, voice rather low.

Brachen stopped in place, fur bristling, eyes wide. "Mac..." he breathed. "The boss's goddaughter and her fiancee are dead. They were murdered in their home." Shaking, he ran a paw through his hair. "It was done with a blade. The boss thinks it was me."

Mac froze, gaping at him for a very long moment. "He... hell, Brachen, what?"

"It wasn't me!" Brachen snapped back. "I know I'm not right, I know I've THOUGHT about how to do it so many times my head could blow, but...dammit, it wasn't me."

"I never said it was you," Mac said in reply, rocking back a little. "I just, hell, I'm tryin' ta process that, alright?"

"Me too." Brachen threw off his coat, suddenly feeling a little too hot. He was breathing too hard, and everything was getting light. He staggered over to his window, looked out on the street to watch for cops and grasped at his hair - longer than a tom's should be. "This blood...it's the hitters they sent after me."

Mac took a long breath, his eyes having widened at the sight of the blood. "Wait, they sent hitters are you already?" He swayed a little where he was. He wanted to walk over to the other, and wasn't sure it was a good plan at that point. "Hell," he muttered again.

Brachen stood still for a moment, frozen in the middle of his apartment, his home, the place that had been his sanctuary. "I don't know what I'm going to do, Mac. They're scared. They're looking to put a face on this so it's not so terrifying." He chuckled humorlessly. "Looks like I'm that face."

"Shit," Mac swore again, his paws up and fluttering around. "Well, first of all, change, 'cause you're not goin' ta be able ta 'et anywhere covered in blood." He swallowed. "I... do you have any idea who might have done it, do they know where you live?"

Brachen, not having any better ideas, went into his room to change. Normally, he felt aware in situations like this, or he'd always thought he would, but right now the noise in his head was as silent as the grave. When he emerged, it was with a clean shirt...but he didn't feel any better. "I don't know who could have done it. I heard she was getting married but...shit." He trailed off, frustrated.

Mac swallowed, having been tempted to follow the other and deciding against it. "Alright, well..." He had no ideas either. "Hell, how many cats use knifes? Rival 'angs, anythin'?"

"Whoever they are, the cat's an amateur. They used a knife on purpose," he switched back into a voice he hadn't used in a long time, the voice he used when he was quizzing Mac, "Why would they do that, do you think?"

Mac nearly screamed out at the other, letting out an offended breath instead. "Hell if I know!" he snapped, his mind working overtime anyway. "Only reason would be ta place the blame on either you or me, probably you. Who the hell have you pissed off lately?"
