"That sounds nice. Do you have any family besides Teazer?"

His mind flickered to his mother, who he didn't know one way or the other about, and his Uncle who he hoped was still alive, but... "No."

It seemed like family was a touchy subject for him. "I'm sorry. That was a little intrusive on my part."

"Eh, it's a logical question. How 'bout you? Any family?"

"My father," she winced, "wasn't the nicest tom and my mother did what he wanted. She was afraid of getting hurt by him. He would beat both of us, mostly me." She sighed. "That's why I left my hometown." She scoffed. "My first experience here made home seem tame."

She sighed. "I'm just tired of worrying about if a tom will hurt me or not." She looked at him. "I'm sorry for making you hear all that. You don't need to have a friend whose so broken." She lowered her head and started to cry softly.

Jerrie's ears flickered a bit and he motioned to the chair across from him, seeing as there weren't any other customers in at the moment. "It's...alright. Things happen t' cats, an' it's jus' th' way it goes sometimes."

She sat down heavily in the chair. "I know what you are saying but it doesn't really help. I've been told something like that before." She looked at him fearfully. "Can I ever get away from the fear of toms trying to hurt me?" She asked this in a small, scared voice and her eyes seemed to ask him to save her.

She gave him a sad and watery smile. "It's OK. No, it's not, but no else seems to know what to do either." She sighed. "When I first saw you, you were taking out your knife. I thought you were a bad tom. Then a few days later, a queen told me that you were a good sort. Are you?"

"I wanted to ask because I'm, well, starting to like you." She blushed. Had she just admitted to liking a tom? "I don't want to get hurt, though." She said this in another small, scared voice. She looked down, embarrassed.

Jerrie carefully considered how to reply to that. "Demeter. Y'-y' a real nice gal, I just...I ain't sure I'm ready for a relationship right now. An' I'm sure y' c'd do better'n me."
