Name: Munkustrap Hollister
Aliases: Munk, Munku, Munkus, ‘Straps, Mr. Hollister
Age: 31
Build: Munkus stands a little shy of 6’ and of an light weight. His build is slender, his shoulders narrow. He’s easily the smallest of the three Hollister brothers.
Origin: He grew up in a suburban Felidae home that looked far better from the outside than from the inside. His mother had abandoned the family when he was no more than five and his father was never the kindest of toms.
Occupation:Munkustrap is a junior associate in a defense firm.
Eyes: Bright blue
Hair: His black and silver striped headfur is worn trimmed and slicked back professionally, his appearance always perfect to hide the turmoil in his home life.
Scars: Several, though not visible. Mostly they tend to be weakened points in his bones from previous breaks. He has one deep scar on the back of his left shoulder from his father (though the exact situation of this he won’t discuss). A few others scar him from especially severe beatings, but they tend to be on his back or abdomen where they aren’t visible.
Fur/Markings: Black and silver tabby stripes, short in length, but kept tamed and combed smooth.
Attire: He wears double-breasted suits in dove grey for everyday and court business, accenting them with ties in muted colors. His eveningwear is a similar style of suit in a dark grey, nearly black, with a deep blue tie.
Accessories: Munkus carries a pocket watch that was a gift from a professor from his law school with the words facta non verba inscribed inside.
WOC: If given his druthers he would prefer not to carry a weapon, but he has started carrying a small pistol for defense over the last few years.
Appearance: Munkustrap dresses sharply, but doesn’t always have time to press everything exactly, so some of his suit shirts will have creases in the wrong positions. His suit coats are shiny at the elbows due to wear. He hasn’t bought a new suit in a long while, mostly due to the cost of it. He keeps his appearance impeccable otherwise though. He’s also on the thin side of average due to “forgetting” to eat when they’re running low on groceries. His fiance has been studiously trying to remedy that issue, and it seems to be working a bit.
Personality: Munkustrap can be a bit of a control freak. He tends to be tense, like a coiled spring. He has major difficulty trusting others to do anything right and so tries to keep enough control to manage whatever it is he feels he’s responsible for. He lives by the motto: “If you want something done right—do it yourself.” In the few rare moments when he actually relaxes he can be quite personable.
Having grown up in the home he did he tends to find that a cold shell builds a far better protection than anything else. On the other paw, if he trusts you, he trusts you completely. He’s protective of his family and loved ones, sometimes to his own detriment. If it wasn’t for his younger brother he would have left his father’s house when Macavity did, but a large part of him felt it would have been a betrayal of Tugger to do so. Occasionally a cat can get past his guard without much difficulty—does this mean they know about his history? Unlikely. Electra managed to do that and Munkustrap is willing to admit that besides his elder brother she may well be the only cat he knows who actually knows what he’s thinking more often than not.
He has enough of a passive-aggressive streak that if he’s told he is unable to do something then he’ll sure as hell try. He tries to curb that, but it shows up often when he least wants it. On the other hand, it got him where he is today and seems to work well enough to keep him going.
Special skills: Knows which methods will work best on which sorts of juries, and tends to be rather quick on his feet.
Weaknesses: Not overly large—tall yes, strong not especially. He’s also got an emotional weak spot when it comes to Electra—and to some extent his brothers.
Fears: Complete Trust—cats either leave or hurt you, or both. Failure—it wasn’t an option growing up and it certainly isn’t now. Turning into his father.
Likes: Things running on schedule, things happening according to plan, a peaceful hour in which to read the newspaper and unwind from the day before having to deal with anycat else.
Dislikes: Something screwing up whatever plan he has, being disturbed when he’s finally taking a moment for himself.
History: Munkustrap was born shortly before the turn of the century to a Deuteronomy and Grizabella Hollister. His memory of his mother is faint, but it does exist in brief glimpses. He remembers she was very pretty, but not the nicest cat. When he was about 5 his mother and father had a huge fight after which his mother left—in the middle of the night, without saying goodbye to her sons. Munkustrap, who had woken to the sounds of the fight took his mother’s parting words of “No cat in this family will ever make anything of himself” as a personal challenge. Those words are the sharpest memory he has of her and due to a streak of almost unreasonable pride he decided, as soon as he was old enough to understand what she’d meant, that he would prove her wrong.
During his formative years the young tabby did his best to avoid irritating his father’s temper, but that was nearly impossible and if he wasn’t making Deuteronomy mad in some way it was likely because he was holed up in his bedroom with a dresser in front of the door. By the time he was 15 he had made up his mind that the first opportunity he got he would leave Felidae and he wouldn’t look back. That opportunity finally came when he was accepted into Harvard Law School.
He attended the Law School, working his tail off in both classes and a night job to pay his way through college. He occasionally received money from home, but it covered very little. As certain as he had been that he never wanted to lay eyes on Felidae again he was now equally certain he was homesick. He didn’t fit with the other toms attending Harvard, he really was just a kit from a broken home, not that he’d ever admit that, and Felidae was calling him back again.
With the declaration of war in 1917 the Universities stopped their normal classes to change over to predominantly military classes. Munkustrap was drafted late that year and found himself in a military training camp. He was just about to be shipped out when the Influenza pandemic reached the camp he was stationed at. The decimation is not something he ever speaks of, suppressing the memory as best he can. He was one of those that through some stroke of chance didn’t end up infected, but he lost a large number of young men he’d come to know over the months leading up to it.
After the war, he returned to Harvard to finish his degree, returning to Felidae in 1921. He found employment in a defense firm shortly after returning to his hometown and has been working there since. His relations with his elder brother have always been a bit distant in a "you're my brother, and we get along, but we've got other cats we care about more" sort of way. Even after college and then Macavity moving out, their relationship seems to have kept on a pretty even keel in that respect.
Over the last couple of years, Munkustrap has finally been able to get out from under his father's roof (when the older tom dropped dead of a heart attack finally) and settle in his own apartment with the hope of being married soon.
Love Interest: He's engaged to Miss Electra Pierce and very much in love.
Quotes: “I’m fine.” “What is it with everyone and worry about my eating habits?” “What’s going on here?...never mind, don’t answer that. I don’t want to know.”
Theme Song: Hunter by Heather Dale, I’m Still Here—John Rezeznik (From “Treasure Planet”)
