Another low growl escaped Mac's throat. "And you think that possibly is worth stayin' here for?"

"Better the fiend you know than the one you don't." Munkus replied.

Mac's ears flattened at that. "How dare you?" he said, voice low but above a growl. "I would never do anythin' to hurt you two. Not like him. I'm offerin' you protection and a play to stay and you compare me to him?"

Munkustrap's ears went back. "I wasn't talking about you, Mac! I mean what you're involved in. We've spent our lives dealing with him, but neither of us really knows what we'd be getting into going with you."

"What's there to know?" Mac asked, turning away from his brother and blowing smoke into the gathering evening. "I'd protect you, isn't that what matters?"

"And make us more reliant on you than we are on him. I don't want to risk Tugger getting involved."

That got Mac's attention and he turned back to look at his brother. "What 'xactly do you think I'd get him involved in anyway? It's not like I'd send him out on gang business."

"I'm not saying you would, but think about who we're talking about here. Even if he isn't sent out he'll manage to trip into the middle of something somehow."

Mac scowled and looked back over the street. Damnit, the other was right. "So, what do you want me to do then? 'Cause I can't keep comin' back here and seein' what he does to the pair of you."

Munkus rested his elbows on his knees, entwining his fingers as he looked across the street. "If you can't then don't." Alright that was a bit too blunt...he didn't want to cut all ties with his brother, but really...

Mac rose abruptly, turning to look down at the other. "So you don't want my help then? You just goin' to stay here rather than accept that life deals you a hand that means walkin' on the wron' side of the law?"

"I'm already walking on that sie of the law as much as I intend to, Macavity. I'm not saying we don't appreciate your help, I'm saying that I'm not leaving. If you want to try and keep an eye on Tugger while running whatever the hell it is you're doing feel free." He stayed seated.

Mac's eyes narrowed. "Aren't you the one who was just sayin' how unsafe that would be?"

"I was. I'm just saying, I'm not leaving. If you want to convince Tugger to join you in this, I won't stop you, but do consider what he might be getting into."

Mac's tail swished angrily behind him as he considered. "Damnit," he swore. If he was lucky, maybe in a few years things would have settled down enough he might feel safe enough trying to bring his youngest brother into the business, but even then it was doubtful. He at least knew how dangerous things were from the beginning.
