"Wait," Darrien raise his paws up in a halting motion. "You had to have been staying in his house to get kicked out of it."

"Yes," Mistoffelees agreed slowly, realizing what he'd said. "Which he was letting me stay at after dearest uncle had thrown a paper weight at my head and kicked me out of St. James' street. There was a lot of kicking out."

"That does sound like Jones," Darrien agreed. "But I'm sure you had other friends other than your lawyer to turn to?"

"Not really, well," he considered. "The Hollister house was out automatically and Jerrie tries to support his sister much as he can, so they scrape by. Besides, the lawyer was offering me the entire house, I didn't realize it was his, or rather, where he lived when he lived anywhere."

"You didn't expect him to live anywhere in particular...?"

Biting the bottom of his lip, Mistoffelees shrugged. "He mostly lived in a hotel and offered me his house. At the time I thought it was just a spare house, not his own that he just happened not to often occupy."

"Misto," Darrien said cautiously. "What aren't you telling me about this Zimmerman fellow?"

"What do you mean?" Mistoffelees asked, tip of his tail flickering, thinking of all the things he would never tell another cat about Coricopat. Not just that they were lovers, but that Coricopat had shot Jones to keep him safe, or the way Coricopat got offended on his car's behalf or how warm he could be behind closed doors. "What could I not be telling you? He helped me, and though it took a while, I trust him."

"I made a living off of reading other cats, M," Darriend deadpanned. "I can tell when a cat is hiding something. You repeated what I said twice to buy yourself enough time to formulate a response."

The tip of Mistoffelees' tail twitched up, not quite wrapping around his leg like it used to but close. "You've been gone a long time," he said quietly. "Not only do things change, but why should I trust you now?"

"Because I left because of you," Darrien said with a small frown. "Did you think I just left because I felt like it?"

"Yes," Mistoffelees replied and came up short. "Wait, because of who?"

"You," Darriend repeated. "Jones was begining to strike a little too close to home and I could do it."

"What does that even mean?" Mistoffelees pressed. "Why would you leave because of me?"
