Name: Sun Meixiu
Aliases: Quan Yin, Moon-Kissed-Petals (when she tries to use perceived oriental mystery to her advantage), Unmarriageable Girl
Age: 22
Build: She’s tall for a Chinese queen at 5’7”. She’s thin, but not unhealthy. She is not overly muscular, but exercise and balancing her mind has always been very important to her.
Origin: She was born in 1903, shortly after Chinese immigration to the United States was banned. Her parents were established in the Chinese-American community in Felidae, her father was an apothecary who made most of his living producing opium for the community at large.
Occupation: Apothecary and producer of opium
Eyes: A rare pale blue, just like her mother.
Hair: Dark charcoal black and kept very long. She keeps it in a high pony tail that brushes her shoulder blades.
Scars: One deep gash on the side of her neck. She wears high mandarin collars to cover it.
Fur/Markings: Most of her is covered in pale, cream-colored fur with dark chocolate on her face, ears, and all four paws. Her tail is rather fluffy and tipped in dark like an ink stain.
Attire: She is most comfortable in the simple gray dress tunic worn casually in the Chinese community. Meixiu adapts well to her environment, so she is also capable of wearing western-style dresses and dress silks when she wants to play up her oriental heritage for professional purposes.
Accessories: A Quan Yin pendant made of white jade, and jade bangles on her left wrist. However, since she works with her hands so much she wears the bangles less, and she wears the pendant under her clothes to keep from conflicting too much with a largely Christian society.
WOC: A stiletto blade in her sleeve. If she’s expecting trouble, she’ll also carry a larger short sword under her tunic. She’s only minimally trained in both, but in the past she’s found that cats are often intimidated by the sight of it as much as anything.
Appearance: Meixiu has a very simple kind of beauty. She does not like excessive makeup. She’s well-kept and bears herself in the manner of a young lady at court. Her dignity is important to her, and it reflects no matter what she’s wearing. The dark patterns on her fur hide the stains from years of working with herbs and opiates, but not the calluses.
Personality: Meixiu is a survivalist at heart and has faith in her own perseverance. She believes in balance and feels as though she is in a constant state of negotiation with the universe. She wastes very little time feeling sorry for herself when bad things happen. She believes that over-emotional states lead to mistakes and avoids them as much as possible, trying to address each situation in the most clinical way she can. She is also a practicing Buddhist.
Special skills: Meixiu is good with herbal remedies and understands drug production --- although the opium makes her more money, she prefers her pharmacy work. She also has rudimentary medical and anatomy training from her father and elder brothers, who would often enlist the help of her steadier hands to take care of Chinese cats unable to go to American doctors. She does not have the training and resources of a physician, but desperate cats (oftentimes, those involved in illegal activities) will sooner come to her than a hospital. Because she’s lived seeing the linguistic conflicts between cats, she’s worked hard to perfect her English --– in part because of the American cats that were injured after doing illegal things and would frequent her father’s company.
Weaknesses: She has a hard time relating to most cats, both inside and outside the Chinese community. She’s often considered headstrong for a Chinese queen, and is often considered unmarriageable. Meixiu is fine with this.
Fears: Working her entire life and never improving her standard of living, a husband or pimp controlling her life, and that she’s being punished in this life for her actions in another.
Likes: Tea, mixing her remedies, kits, fireworks, and her favorite book is The Journey to the West, which she reads whenever she feels like her grasp on her native tongue is slipping. Although she would never admit it, she also likes her stiletto, short sword, and the cheap silks she wears to get the attention of western toms so they’ll keep coming back for a taste of the “mysterious orient”.
Dislikes: Disrespect, coffee, hard liquor (except sake), ignorance, and police.
History: Sun Meixiu (in Chinese naming systems, the surname comes first) was born in 1903, just after the government crackdown on Chinese immigration. Her grandparents and parents were established in the United States and made a reasonable living through her father’s shop…and the den in back used for smoking and gambling. Her brothers enforced her father’s rules and Meixiu and her mother helped him mix his treatments.
Meixiu’s mother died from a respiratory illness when she was ten, and her eldest brother was killed in a conflict with the Felidae PD when she was thirteen (his inability to speak English contributed to the escalation of the tragedy). This resulted in her taking a more direct role in her family’s business and affairs of their home. She balanced the family budget because her older brother was not good enough with his math or English to be effective and her father was too busy. Once his hands became arthritic, she performed surgeries and took over the mixing processes.
Around the time she was 16, she was pressured by her older brother to take a husband. He’d become addicted to a competitor’s opium, unable to deal with the pressure of working towards an uncertain future with their father’s declining health. Inspired by the rising freedom of American women in the wake of the war, Meixiu resisted the pressure. Her brother became increasingly distant, aggressive and ineffective, developing a secret gambling debt to the local Chinese mob that her family had always had decent relationships with due to a fair percentage negotiation and deep respect between the current leader and her father.
Two months ago, her father succumbed to a long battle with his medical problems, which Mexiu was unable to help him with, followed closely by her brother’s suspicious overdose. The gang informed Meixiu that her body would be required in exchange for her brother’s debt, and she’s presently seeking a way out.
