He chuckled softly at that. "And do you get caught singing often then? I thought I was special for a moment there."

"You would be the third," she admitted. "But the most friendly of the three, but then, anyone is friendly compared to Mssr Martin," she said with a shudder. It was true, out of the three toms that had caught her singing - the only one that she seemed to enjoy being "found" by was the tom standing before her. Perhaps it was the closeness of age and the fact that he did not seem to judge that made her like him. In a purely platonic sense.

"Martin Smith?" he asked, in some surprise. "Oh dear. That's, well, never actually an enjoyable experience."

"It is an experience I would not even wish on an enemy," she said, agreeing completely with that. At least, she thought with a mental sigh, Mssr Hollister did not have medieval torture devices for Mssr Martin to be playing with. She gave a mental shake, not wanting to further think on that or.. At least here, there was no need to keep a hand level with one's eyes.
((Lise, don't give Mac or Martin ideas. Especially ideas like that. And ugh, now I have Mme Giry chirping her "Those who speak of what they know, find out too late that prudent silence is wise. Joseph Buquet, hold your tongue. He will burn you with the heat of his eyes" in my head.))

Mistoffelees' smile was strained. "It would hardly be an enjoyable experience, no," he agreed. "Though, honestly I wouldn't mind setting him on my enemies so long as I knew he wasn't going to turn around and join them instead."

"I suppose you do raise an excellent point," she consented, bobbing her head in agreement. Of course, this was not the Palais and there was not a threat of the Lasso. She pondered if she should drop a small bit of rope on Martin's desk, but decided he most likely would not get the reference.
"One should tell him to keep his hand at the level of his eyes," she murmured absently.
((Misto should get the reference if he's read Phantom. ))

Mistoffelees' brow quirked up at that, tilting his head a little to the side. "You must miss Paris, to reference it so often," he mused, not really thinking. "Though, I hardly think that's going to help Mr. Smith as I doubt anycat would be going after him conventionally, if anycat ever did."

"I suppose I do," she confessed. "My family is there," she admitted. "Two elder brothers and two elder sisters. I was the baby of the family. I have a nephew that I have never met, maybe someday, if I have the courage to return to France, if just for a visit." She was quiet for a long moment. "I miss France, but I do not miss the memories of growing up there. War is.. hell," she said quietly.
She allowed herself a brief moment to lose herself in her memories, before recalling the tom before her. "I do beg forgiveness as my mind wanders onto topics that are best left undiscussed. My lack of sleep does not help me to remember not to talk about certain things."
((and her problem sleeping stems from nightmares brought on from growing up during the war. Really should work on that flashback. Do have one of when Raoul made her promise not to read the Phantom.))
((edit a day later: tag fail. again))

Mistoffelees' tail curled, making the crink that never healed more obvious for a moment before he straightened it up. "It doesn't have to be war to be hell," he murmured. "It can be found in so many places." His own nightmares had been getting better since he started sleeping in the same bed as Coricopat.

"I suppose you are right," she consented, her eyes widening for a moment at the sight of his damaged tail, but said nothing about it. Wasn't her place to. She played with the cuff of her left sleeve for a moment while she attempted to figure out how to apologize for upsetting him.

"Hell is a place found in many locales," Mistoffelees said with a shrug. "We go on anyway. It's how it is."

"Oui, Mssr," she murmured. "I believe you are most correct. And.. I apologize for upsetting you. It was not my intent." Her tail drooped and started to brush against her leg, clearly indicating she was upset with herself.

He frowned at her slightly. "It's alright," he replied with a shrug. "I'm not that upset and certainly not at you."

"If you are sure," she said, allowing her tail to slowly raise. "It is just.. I do not want to upset any of Mssr Hollister's friends and I was afraid I had upset you." She worried the cuff of her sleeve for a moment. "I was afraid that if I upset the wrong cat, that Mssr Hollister would find out and I would be out of a job," she admitted.

He couldn't help but arch a brow at that, smiling in some amusement. "Oh, don't worry. Unless you did something utterly out of the blue, I doubt he'd worry unduly. He'd probably be amused. Not... that you should go around insulting people, especially Mr. Smith, but me? He'd just laugh."
