Martin stared at her, partly in shock, partly in annoyance, and partly uncaring. So many expressions on one face that usually looked emotionless would have been shocking to anyone who knew him. "Who said I didn't?" he almost demanded, impertinent.

"The fact that one of the things likely to hurt him the most at the moment you're not letting happen," She shrugged slightly, turning to go before she could say anything more. Her gaze drifted to the main staircase, but the white queen headed for the door.

Whereas Martin was more than content to let her walk out, Macavity had that moment chosen to come down the stairs, flipping through some papers. He'd been working in the second floor office and froze utterly when he saw her across the floor.

Grids stopped when she saw him out of the corner of her eye, turning to face him. The ground she stood on was uncertain at best and crumbling at worst. She should just leave, she really should.

Attention suddenly focused on the scene before him, and nothing else, Martin didn't make a move one way or the other.
Macavity stared at her a long moment before something hurt and small flickered through his eyes and he turned on his heel to head back up the stairs.

Griddlebone hesitated for a moment before crossing the entry rapidly, taking the stairs two at a time and catching him by the elbow, "Macavity, wait!"

He just about wrenched his elbow out of her grip. "Yeah? What do you want here?"

He swore under his breath and turned back to her. "Then go back ta him. I didn't ask you ta come here. Leavin' your jewelry behind is your own damn fault. I'm what I am, you shouldn't act surprised that I'm not above stealin'."
