Tugger let a growl escape him at that. "What? Jeez Misto, how was I supposed t'know? Y'were in hospital f'half of it an' we've already bin' over why I didn't come back there. Even if I hadn't been busy, ain't like I had any clue where t'find you anyway. Y'don't tend t'leave forwardin' addresses of late."

"And I've been out of the hospital for a long time too," Misto said softly, biting back his first several reactions. "The fact I was in the hospital alone should have told you something was wrong. Besides I..." he stopped short of telling Tugger the address on Fourth Street, figuring neither Tugger nor Coricopat would be too pleased with him knowing that information. His tail was swishing hard enough he had to wince when it pulled the still healing break.

"I know that," Tugger snapped, "that's why I came t'see you soon as I found out. Ain't my fault y'didn't want t'know."

"I already said I was sorry for that!" Misto said, tail still swishing and he wished it would stop. "I mean, you and Jerrie were the... third guest that had shown up that day. I was exhausted and hurting. I'm glad you came but your timing was terrible..."

"Well that's fair enough," Tugger retorted, trying to keep his tone level, "but then y'can't really blame me f'not comin' back, so stop usin' it as a damn excuse f'your bitterness at me not bein' around."

Misto stopped dead for a moment before taking an extra step to catch up to him. "I went looking for you though," he said, keeping his own tone as level as he could. "I understand you not coming back to the hospital, I do, but after I was out I started looking for you. Told Jerrie to pass it along when he saw you, went to the Chrysalis a couple times, sat out on that park bench several times."

"Like I said," Tugger barely bit back another growl as he spoke, "I've bin' busy. Don't feel special, I ain't seen Jerrie neither."

"With what?" Misto asked, voice rising slightly and he looked ashamed of that a moment later.

Tugger quickened his pace just a little at that, it was just the question he didn't want. He didn't want to explain what he was doing to anyone, not until he had something to show for it. Besides, how did you even begin to explain that just a few days ago, he and the other recruits had even been pulled from their training to join the hunt for a murderer. And that was without everything else he'd been trying to work out, like how he and Munkustrap were going to get on without the extra income when his training went full time next week, how to tell Griddlebone he couldn't work for her anymore without her wanting to know why. And that was even without thinking on what Macavity had told him about their mother.
"Work, f'a start." he offered eventually, "An' like I said, I'm runnin' late as it is."

"You, work?" Misto snapped and regretted how disbelieving he sounded as soon as it was out. "I just... if I let you walk away now what's the likelihood I'll see you again in the next month? I just want to talk..."

Tugger didn't bother to curb the growl this time. "Nice t'know y'think the same of me as everyone else does." well that settled things, he wouldn't even consider sharing what he was doing with the rest of his time with Mistoffelees now, but he'd show him in time, just like he'd show Mac... "As f'seein' me again, you ain't makin' much of a case f'why the hell you'd want to anyhow." his tone was cold.

"I'm sorry," Misto said softly. "I shouldn't have said that, but we've been friends for what, something like ten years? Have you been busy with work once then? It's less that I don't think you can and more you haven't." He stopped walking again for a moment as the last bit processed, and his ears flattened.
"I-I... I wasn't aware I had to make a case for seeing you again," he said, voice dropping. "You're my friend, I want to talk, why is that so much?"

Tugger sighed heavily at his friend's words, shaking his head as he tried to swallow at least some of his pride, "It ain't, but try t'see things from my angle too, the first thing y'do is accuse me of deliberatly avoidin' you. I ain't bin doin' that. I didn't come back to the hospital, no, y'know why. Short of that I ain't seen anyone long enough t'have chance t'think t'ask if you were out let alone find out y'were lookin' for me. It ain't that I don't care, but I got my own list of things t'deal with as well, an f'once, I really have bin' busy, however hard that might be t'believe."

Misto's ears flickered again. "It's not... actually that hard to believe, just different. And... seriously, what have you been doing to that takes so much time you can't even stop by?"

"First of all," Tugger pointed out, deliberately skirting the question, "stoppin' by would've involved knowin' where t'find you."
