"I can't say I had fun running, and no, I didn't," she replied. "If your father knew I was in town, he would kill me."

Macavity's went flat. "That bastard nearly killed us," he said, voice low. "And you just let it happen? Is that what you're sayin'?"

Grizabella took a deep gulp of air, tried to sift through all the things she was feeling and wasn't feel and wasn't letting him know she was feeling. "I was a queen abandoning her husband. He had the legal right to you, and although D is hardly a loving father, he's highly protective of his property. You had a chance there."

Macavity's ears went flat and he gaped at her. "Had a chance?" he thundered, unable to keep his voice down. "We had a chance there?"

Grizabella had known it would be hard, but now...her words were failing her. "Do you really think that a queen with luggage and three children would have gotten out of town without him catching up to us? What do you think would have happened if he'd caught up to us? What was I supposed to do, Macavity?"

"Give a damn!" he hollered. "Do you have any idea what that bastard did ta us? Would you like the blow by blow account, darlin' of what it was like ta live with him?" He growled at her. "You should have tried, you should have run and taken us with you. You should have done anythin' and you did nothin'."

She hissed, something hot and angry suddenly rising up in her with no source. "I did care. Do you have any idea how hard it was to leave you behind? I haven't had it easy, sugar. Lets take a moment to consider what he did to me."

Macavity growled, low and long. "Certainly. Let's consider what he did ta you. You think I forgot? I damn well remember what happened those lon' nights when you two would fight. But you married him, darlin'. I was born ta him and I had ta live with him and what you did ta me."

"It's easy for a tom to say that," she said, lips curving into a snarl. "It's so easy to stay with a cat that abuses you. I'm not saying it wasn't hard for you, but I couldn't stay. I needed to do what I could for myself." She gritted her teeth and closed her eyes through a wave of emotion. "I tried to keep tabs on you. Help you where I could..."

That last statement actually made Macavity take a step back it felt like such a slap to the face. "You helped us where you could," he said, voice monotone in shock. "You kept tabs on us. You... You horrible old bitch," he growled. "You tried ta help us?" he yelled. "Where the hell were you then, when my ribs were broken and I was tryin' ta keep my brother in school? When 'Strap was workin' his way through college ta try and live any sort of life? Where the hell where you when I took my bleedin' brother ta the hospital because that bastard threw a broken bottle at a kit's back? Where the hell where you when I spent nights with the dresser in front of the door and him poundin' on it? And you helped where you could," he sneered.

She didn't respond to the rest. She couldn't. She kept her head high, because that was the only thing she could do when faced with the truth versus all of her personal lies. "Where did you think that money came from?" She hissed. "Who do you think convinced The Boss to give some scrappy little tabby a chance?"

"Money?" he growled, blinking slightly. "What money, the hell are you...?" He blinked again, and rocked back on one heel. "Oh, that was you then was it? You really think that helped? It covered enough food for one of us in that house, usually Tugger. God, did you think that was helpin'? And like hell was I a scrappy little tabby at that point. I damn well proved myself."

"It was the most I could do," she ground out. "You wanted me to come in and rescue you? Is that what you wanted? Well the world doesn't work that way. I've lived. every. day. with my choice. But I don't lie to myself about it. I could help with money and influence. I couldn't protect you from him."

Macavity growled again. "Ta hell with you," he snapped. "Shouldn't have bothered comin'."

"There was no way I was getting out of this conversation without an argument, Macavity. I've known that for years."
