Misto watched him go, taking a careful sip of the tea, before glancing back toward Fred. "He's... rather abrupt?"

Fred nodded, looking quite chagrined. "He's usually like that around new people in the house. Takes him a bit to warm up. Also, today was a rough day at the kitchen. New busboy, rather accident-prone. Must've dropped four separate trays of dirty dishes. Took all of Ox's self-control not to scream at the boy. Mostly he just stared daggers at the boy."
He shook his head, chuckling. "Listening to me, gossiping like an ol' biddy. Speaking of which, we have one as a neighbor so be warned. And there I go again."

"Good to know though," Misto said. "And to avoid them. And..." he paused, paws still around the warm cup. "You often get cats moved in with you then?"

Fred leaned back in his chair, letting out a breath. "At least once a year, one of her friends would get into trouble and need a place to retreat to. We've had a couple of problems with it in the past, but then again the majority of them have worked out well enough. So it's not an uncommon occurrence, if that's what you mean."

"I..." he paused for a moment. "You know, I appreciate this a lot, and letting me move in so quickly but I... I've never actually talked to your niece much before."

"Oh, I know. To be perfectly frank, she's infatuated with you. Been sneaking looks at you since the first day. I can certainly see why." His amused smile was tempered by the shrewd look in his eyes.

Misto's eyes widened at him, and his ability to speak packed it's bags and moved to Tahiti for the time being. "I-I, that is..." his ears laid themselves flat against his head, and he figured his bags were still by the door, he could retreat to Jerrie's again, tear up the note and curl up on the couch. There were other rooms to rent, right? "T-the hell?" he managed finally. "I... I..."

Fred was in dead earnest as he leaned forward in the chair and put his elbows on the table. "You are an attractive young tom, what queen wouldn't be attracted to you? Of course, I personally think it a passing thing for her at least. Make friends with her and she'll stay with you to the ends of the Earth. So that is my advice to you, Mistoffelees: become her friend. You won't find another quite like her."

One of Misto's ears flickered somewhat upward at that, and taking a deep breath he glanced down to the tea cup in front of him, taking a quick sip to give him a moment to think. "I... sorry. It's been an interesting time of late, I over reacted." He paused again before looking up at the other. "T-thanks for the advice though. I'll keep it in mind."

"Again, you're welcome, very welcome indeed. And I'm sorry that you've been having a rough time of it. I had noticed that you seemed a bit haggard the last couple of days. I guess I thought you could use a place of refuge as well, and I figured, why not let it be our place? We're not here often enough as it is."
Fred looked down at his own cup of tea. "I won't lie to you and say I don't want to know what's wrong. But as you said already, we barely know each other so I won't ask you to spill your own secrets. But I do want you to know, if you need someone to talk to, I am here to listen and offer advice if you so wish. I won't judge you, I swear on my sister's grave."

Misto blinked at him for a moment, before looking back down at his cooling tea. "I-I, thank you," he said softly. "I, I'll keep that in mind." He swallowed hard, still looking down at the tea and blinking rapidly. Everlasting cat he was just so tired and hurt and to get an offer like that from somecat he honestly barely knew?
Taking another shuddering breath he rose. "E-excuse me, I'm really tired. C-can I see the room?"

Fred's smile was all gentleness and understanding, as he rose as well and spoke quietly. "Of course, follow me please." He lead the way into the hall, where he picked up both of Mistoffelees' bags and ignoring any protest, began up the stairs. He did not speak again until the reached the room where the other cat would be sleeping.
Setting down the bags on the bed, he turned towards Mistoffelees. "Bathroom is across the hall, look for the brass mermaid. Breakfast at eight, but we tend to run late on the account of since the walls are thick, and we're all rather heavy sleepers." His smile was apologetic this time, but he only said a soft good night as he made a tactical retreat out of the room. The poor kit didn't need to know that both he and Ox were light sleepers and the walls weren't as thick as he claimed them to be...
[[Exeunt Fred, for now.]]

Misto had followed the other cat quietly, opening his mouth to protest he could carry his own bags, but not nearly ready to trust his own voice at that point. As he went up the stairs, he rubbed at his eyes quickly.
"Thank you," he told Fred quietly. "Have a good night." Once the other was gone he changed quickly and slipped into the bed. Thick walls or not, he tended to cry quietly anyway, and burying his face in a pillow, he let himself cry for the first time in years.
((Would you like to start the next morning with Mags, m'dear?))

((Of course! ;D )) [Day 38, morning]
Maggie's internal alarm wouldn't let her sleep past seven thirty so she rose quickly and stumbled to the bathroom. Checking her teeth and humming a tune, she washed her face and looked in the mirror. Just another day, I guess. Grabbing her robe from her room, she went downstairs and put the kettle on in the kitchen.

Sleeping a bit later than he usually did, Misto still woke up fairly early. He liked mornings, after all, and though he hadn't gotten to bed at a particularly reasonable hour, he wanted to wake at one.
Blinking himself awake he considered the room, rubbing his eyes. The night before he had barely glanced around the room he was renting out, and it was honestly rather nice. He was still a little unsure of what to do with the family, but he liked the room well enough. Maybe later he would unpack his two bags just a little, enough to make the space a little more recognizable. It wasn't like he ever carried much with him though.
Finally getting out of the bed, he dressed at a slightly slower pace, tugging a tie into place around his neck that he had picked up the day before, cream and blue. Still sleepy, he went downstairs, intending to put a kettle on for tea, not aware anyone else was awake until he stepped into the kitchen and almost jumped all the way back out of it. "Sorry!" he managed to get out on his way back from seeing a queen in only her nightdress and robe.
