"You went to speak with him then?"

Tantomile nodded, taking another sip of her coffee, silent for a moment, though grateful to Charles for seeming to understand.

"You weren't received well then?"

"Actually, I was somewhat surprised how well things went," Tantomile admitted, "at first anyway. Now I don't know if he was just tolerating me because he was bored, or simply stringing me along the whole time." she shook her head, "I used to be able to read him like a book, not anymore. He's probably more of a mystery to me than anycat."

"He has changed a great deal since we were younger." Charles agreed quietly.

"Needless to say, the second I thought maybe perhaps things were going well, dared to let him know that, well, despite everything, I still care for him, and he threw it right back in my face." she shook her head again, staring into her coffee cup, "It escalated from there, a horrible verbal fight with personal comments, I'm afraid, on both sides. And I've not seen him since," she finished her recount quickly, "I'm not even sure he and I in the same room is a good idea just now."

Charles frowned slightly at that. "Perhaps not. Well, I am sorry to hear that."

She didn't look up from her coffee just yet, "I don't know why it should bother me so much, it isn't as if things haven't been this way for years. I..." Tantomile sighed, shaking her head again, "I don't know."
Looking up at long last, she met his eyes, "Thank you for listening though, I spend all my time listening to other people's personal issues, sometimes I need a little role reversal, though I'm sorry I unburdened myself on you, I'm sure you've more important things to concern yourself with than my family affairs."

"It's no trouble. After all, if you can't speak with a friend who can you speak with?"

Her mouth quirked into a sad smile at the truth in his words, trying to recall the last time she'd felt comfortable enough with a cat to talk to them in this way. The answer was probably never, not since Coricopat at least. She had to swallow back a sudden wave of emotion at that thought, the whole thing suddenly threatening to overwhelm her.
Tantomile gave a little shake of her head, trying to clear it. "Well thank you all the same." she finally managed, when she trusted herself to speak again.

"You're welcome" Came his soft response.

Tantomile just nodded at that, finishing her coffee in silence, needing a moment or two before she could change the subject.

Charles sipped at his own coffee, his odd-colored eyes focusing out the window for a moment as he considered.

The mottled queen put her cup down carefully, "What about your own family? I hope things are not so dysfunctional for you by a long way."

"Oh, heavens no. Philip and I have been getting along as well as we ever have. He still has a tendency toward irritation, but at least he's found a job that requires that of him."
