Bautista sighed. Commissioner Vlask should not have to be at the station this late. Walking carefully with the fresh cup of coffee, he pondered the situation of the Felidae Police Department. Rife with corruption, it was a wonder anything got done. Having reached Vlask's office door, he knocked three times. "Sir?"

By that point Sonya has long since just given up and thudded his head against the desk. One paw grasped about, trying to find his coffee cup, only to growl when he drew it toward him and found it empty. He was debating how to get more coffee in there when he heard several raps on his door. He tore his head from the desk, sitting up though his shoulders refused to straighten. "Yes?" he called, smoothing down his tie. "Come on in."

Opening the door with his free hand, Bautista raised the cup of coffee and allowed the fragrance of it to waft into the office. "Thought you were due for a refill, sir."

Sonya blinked at that, blinked again and then smiled thankfully at the other, taking the cup. "Thank you..." he paused for a moment. "I, I'm not sure I remember your name. Are you new to the department?"

"Bautista Moreno, sir. I've been here for a month and a little more. Transferred from the Miami department for exemplary service. They thought I could be of more use here." There was a hint of bitterness in his tone, but it was gone as fast as it had come. He walked up to the desk and handed the mug over.

Sonya accept the cup, taking a long drink before speaking again. "Ah, yes. I remember meeting you when you first arrived. Sorry, I have been a little... busy with different things. Thank you very much for the coffee." Another pause as he took another drink. "You are here awfully late."

"You are welcome, for the coffee. As to the reason why I'm here so late...I was going over the files for the serial killer murders again, to see if there was anything we missed..." His voice trailed off for a moment and then he spoke again. "I meant no disrespect to your officers, sir, but it is highly possible that something might have been overlooked... I- I just want this murdering sycophant off the streets." Bautista shut his mouth before he dug himself even further into a hole. It was talk like this that had gotten him transferred. And didn't he just sound for all the world like an idealistic greenhorn beat cop. Mother Mary, he was a grown tom. Why couldn't he talk like one?

"Which serial murderer?" Sonya asked softly. "We have a couple of them running around it seems." He swallowed again, considering the other a bit more closely. "And no disrespect to my officers would imply they deserved any respect in the first place. If you find anything they missed, then by all means go over them."

Bautista grimaced. "I may have been jumping to conclusions, sir. But I have noticed something about the three murders. Mind you, it might just be me trying desperately to make sense of this mess."

"We all are at this point," Sonya replied, too tired to really be thinking of his tone or the other's expressions. "What did you notice then?"

"I...I've seen those marks before."

Sonya blinked, blinked again and his eyes snapped up to the other's expression. "You... what was that again? How? Where?"

"When I was still in Miami, not seven months ago there was another murder that had the exact same wounds. There were no leads at all, and the case went cold, along with one or two other murders that we at the Miami Office believed to be in the same string."

"Seven months ago?" Sonya considered that. "Interesting. And seven months ago the murders ended without the culprit being caught? Do you think that means he might have come up here from Miami then?"

Bautista began to pace. "It's highly likely, sir. Even definite. I never quite identified the weapon for certain but I figure it was a one of a kind knife or dagger, with curves and grooves along the blade edge. There was little indication of motive or even a pattern in the murders, besides a single connection I was told blatantly to ignore..." Here Bautista hesitated. What if this commissioner was like those corrupt cats that had had him transferred here when he'd begun to dig too far?
