"Oh yes, I'd heard he'd put another one out." She paused, wrinkled her nose. "I heard it's not as popular, but the quality of literature has never really been determined democratically. I think I'll still read it."

"I think it's about as good as his other work," Philip replied. "But if you like it, then you might enjoy it just as much. We know my opinions on him by now."

Vala snorted. "I'm glad you can be objective."

"Me? I'm a reporter. It's my job when I'm not attempting to tear apart cat's fashion senses." He paused for a moment, tilting his head. "How do you feel about dancing then?"

If she'd been drinking something, she would have spewed. "Dancing? Oh...um. I'm not really that kind of girl. I mean..." she fumbled. "I mean, I like to dance, a lot, but those were little school dances back home and, uh, I'm not too practiced and I don't have a lot of time and..." she stopped, took a deep breath. "I like dancing."

Philip leaned back slightly, crossing one paw on top of the other on top of his knee. "Good to know," he said, having watched her in slight amusement.

Philip grinned. "Great," he said and glanced up as the clock on Main Street rang, glancing down at his wrist watch. "Oh. Totally lost track of time. Where'd you like to meet and any idea when you'd have the time?"

"Great," he said. "Where shall we meet? In front of the clock tower? The station? Unless you don't mind telling me where your apartment is."

"The station's fine," she said with a smile. "And, ah, sorry, I've seen a little too much to tell you where I live yet. It's nothing personal, I'm just paranoid."

Vala was tempted to tell him about how queens were more likely to get away with murder, but she refrained. "I'd like to get to know you, though. So that you're, you know, not so strange."
