Both of Mac's ears flickered and almost went flat. "Really?" he said, a little sarcastically but meaning it to be teasing. He didn't say that he was fairly sure killing cats by itself was not a safe occupation, let alone tossing in Satanic style rituals. "You were down South then?"

"Yes," he purred, suddenly fighting a gravel in his voice that wasn't there before. "They, ah, aren't as hospitable as the saying would make you think."

Nodding, Mac's eyes flickered to the scar away and then back to Brachen's eyes. His head tilted to the side as he tried to think of what he could actually pull from his mass of thoughts to actually say it. "Well, never much liked the thought of that much humidity in the summer anyway. I... I'm 'lad you're back," he said softly.

"I'm glad I'm back, too," Brachen meant it. "Well," he spread his paws, gesturing to the office proper. "This sure is a step up in the world for you. I'm proud."

Mac grinned, tilting back slightly from where he was standing. "Yeah, it's a pretty place. I had the entire thin' built myself."

Brachen whistled. "Wow," he exclaimed, rolling on the balls of his feet. "You've really done well for yourself. Couldn't have been easy."

Mac swallowed and shook his head. "No, it wasn't. Especially not a first." Especially not right after you left, he bit back, not quite willing to say that yet. Yes, it was Brachen in front of him, but it had been almost ten whole years, and he wasn't sure he knew the other cat at all. On the other paw, he just wanted to step around the desk and draw the smaller cat into a hug. He'd missed him...

"I...knew you'd do something great."

Mac smiled and let out a breath that could have been a chuckle. "You were the only one then," he said.

"I missed you." He took a cautious step towards the desk. "It hasn't been as quiet since I've been gone from here." Since that INCIDENT the noise in his own mind was near deafening.

Mac blinked at him for a second before stepping to the side and forward, drawing Brachen into an embrace. "I missed you ta. You certainly took long enough comin' back."

Brachen sank into the other cat's arms. He felt safe for the first time since he'd fled Lousiana. "I should have come back sooner."

Mac sighed quietly, turning his head slightly and catching sight of the scar around Brachen's neck. It looked a whole lot worse from up close and he swallowed. "Yeah. But how were you ta know? That it was safe ta come back I mean... I'm just 'lad you're here now."

Brachen smiled, ironically thinking that he probably would have been safer had he come back sooner. "I made enough money that I'm not, ah, hitting anymore. If you need help I'm here, but..." he didn't want to mention it, mention that he was here for MAC.

Mac gook a step back, though his arms still loosely rested on the other's shoulders. He nodded. "Thanks for the offer, but if you're here ta retire, I'm certainly not goin' ta step inta anythin' like that. I have a third the hitters in town on my payroll after all..."
