Following him, Mac considered commenting on the fact that other tom was actually pretty terrifying, and they damn well should be scared of him. He just... wasn't as much. He had grown up with his demon living in the same house.
He followed the other up the steps, his paws shoved in his pockets, wishing he had a thicker coat or scarf or anything else to keep the cold away, now he wasn't moving.

Brachen led the way up to the 4th floor and pulled a key out of his pocket at the threshold of a door exactly halfway across the floor, it was locked to his belt by a short chain. He opened the door and turned to Hollister, "I hope you don't mind a little idolatry. My choice in decoration could be considered heathen and blasphemous." Brachen did not sound like he cared whether it was heathen or blasphemous. He stepped inside and motioned for Hollister to follow. "Not that I think you will, but I advise against trying to convert me, if that's your poison."

Mac raised a brow, looking around as he entered. "No worries there," he said, taking in the decorations. "Nice enough place." He was entirely fond of the idolatry, but it hardly ruffled his feathers much.

"Make yourself at home." As he walked into the kitchen, Brachen pulled out his bloodied handkerchief and casually placed it at an alter to Shiva on a dresser in the living room. "How do you like your coffee?"

Macavity shrugged, peering at some of the different corners of the room, taking stock of all that was kept in it. "Fine with it any way, black's good enough," he said, considering the books on a shelf, tilting his head to read the titles on the spines better.

With a certain flair for the dramatic, Brachen went about making the coffee. He liked nice coffee and didn't really care about spending a little extra.
Also, he was a little irrationally nervous. He'd never really brought any of his coworkers back to his place (most of that was a function of a healthy sense of self-preservation). He'd never talk about it, but there was a part of him that wanted a certain approval of his sanctuary from an outsider. The entire situation was novel to him, and as exciting as it was, there was also an element of...self-consciousness.

Mac tilted his head farther to one side, walking along the bookcase, one paw trailing across the spines. "Read a lot then?" he asked, one ear flickering.

"That's correct," Brachen called back. "I like a lot of different things. I've found that it's a mentally stretching activity that is unlikely to breed interaction with cats. It allows me to be in a crowd without worrying about somecat just walking up to me and blabbering about something or another." He poured the brewed coffee into two mugs, grabbed some cream from the icebox and sugar from the counter as he walked towards the sofa and coffee table in the epicenter of his room. "What about you, Holly, do you like to read?"

"Sometimes," Mac said, accepting the cup and taking a sip, not even commenting on the nickname. "Not nearly as much as Co--" he paused and scowled slightly at the thought. "As one of my friends used ta." He shrugged. "But a good book now and then hardly goes wron'."

Brachen liked excessive amounts of sugar in his coffee. Smiling fondly, he took a sip and relished the warmth, the energy in that mug. "Books keep me in my right mind, I think."

Mac nodded. "Sure. I mean, if there's a topic I'm interested in, I can 'et quite the amount of readin' done but..." He shrugged. "Haven't read much since high school either. What's your favorite kind of book than?"

"Victorian mysteries and Poe are my favorites--- I have a sort of addiction to the addled, brilliant minds that were popular around the time I was born." Brachen put more cream in his coffee, inhaling the sweet scent. "I also have a love for obscure texts of different countries. Someday, I'd greatly enjoy to travel to India. What was the last thing you read? And unless the topic was fascinating I'm specifying fiction."

It took Mac several minutes of racking his brain to come up with an answer. "Well, fiction books? Everlastin' cat has it been a long time since I read anythin'... I think the last bit was somethin' by Hawthorne..." He just has remembered Cori talking about the book at some point, and alright, so he missed the other, even after the bastard had skipped out of town without being heard from again since. He'd even tried approaching the sister once to ask about the mottled tom.

Brachen nodded. "I find myself reading a good deal of fast, trendy books or short stories to accommodate for my lifestyle. If I don't read anything for too long my mind starts playing tricks on me." He poured himself more coffee. "So tell me about this friend. What kinds of books does he like?"

Mac paused again for another long minute, before shrugging, one ear flickering. "At the moment? Not so sure." It'd been about four years since he last saw the other. "Used ta like Dickens and Hawthorne plenty, some Mark Twain as far as I can remember." He shrugged again. "I lost the time for readin' much after high school." He'd also lost the excuse to hang out in the library for several hours a day while waiting for Tugger.
